It appears that at least one question surrounding the Virginia Tech Hokies will be answered on Saturday, when head coach Frank Beamer is expected to name redshirt sophomore Sean Glennon the starting quarterback for the upcoming season.

Glennon has been taking most of the snaps with the first team, while Cory Holt and Ike Whitaker have been splitting time on the scout team.

So what does Beamer's decision to go with Glennon mean? It means that Beamer has enough faith in the rest of the team to play it safe at quarterback.

Like it or not, as long as he's been in a part of the program Glennon has carried around the label of thinking man's quarterback. Sure, he can make most of the throws and has a decent arm, but his strength is he's a student of the game. He was chosen to back up Bryan Randall his freshman year not because he was the most ready physically, but because he picked up the offense quicker than Holt. Holt has gotten better at reading defenses, but he's still not at the level of Glennon.

A thoughtful signalcaller is exactly what Beamer thinks he needs this season. He had flash last year in Marcus Vick, and both the team and Vick did well. But the season ultimately ended in disaster, with Vick being thrown off the team for an accumulation of offenses. No doubt Beamer longed for the tranquility of the year before, when a less-talented but more cerebral Bryan Randall stewarded the Hokies to the Sugar Bowl.

This year's team has decent running backs, an experienced group of receivers, and, most importantly, a defense that is going to shut teams down. It also has a relatively easy non-conference schedule slate. In short, it doesn't need a player like Holt or Whitaker, who's athletic ability surpasses Glennon's, but whose risk-reward factor is higher. If the Hokies were in more dire straights in other areas of their team, Beamer might take a chance on a Whitaker or Holt. But this year he feels he doesn't have to.

He is clearly still enamored with quarterbacks like Holt and Whitaker. The star of next year's recruiting class is Tyrod Taylor, who is from the same high school as Ronald Curry and is cut in the Michael Vick mold.

This year, however, Virginia Tech will have more of a drop-back look with Glennon. And that's fine with Beamer.
