Is it possible to outscore your opponents 109-10, possess the most efficient passing game in the conference, and still not have a great offense? If you're the Virginia Tech Hokies it is.

Through three games the Hokies' defense has been as good as advertised, pitching two shutouts and holding teams to just over 200 yards of offense per game. The defense, however, has been so good it's masked some of the offense's deficiencies.

Take Virginia Tech's 35-10 win over North Carolina two weeks ago. Thanks to a Xavier Adibi interception return and a blocked punt, the Hokies had two drives start at the one-yard line. They only had a combined 224 yards of offense against the Tar Heels, who allowed over 500 to Division I-AA Furman last weekend.

These first three games of the season, and this weekend's against Cincinnati, are the ones where Virginia Tech should be fine-tuning its offense. Instead it's struggling to find an identity. Against North Carolina Branden Ore looked like a top-flight running back, while quarterback Sean Glennon looked like the rookie signal caller he is.
Against Duke, however, Glennon went 15-for-25 for 301 yards and a touchdown, while Ore was held to 67 yards on 15 carries. He only had 55 against Div. I-AA Northeastern.

The Hokies don't have to be a great offensive team, because their defense will continue to be one of the best in Div. I. But they have to have a better one then they do now, especially with their schedule after Cincinnati. Virginia Tech hosts Georgia Tech, before traveling to Boston College and then hosting Southern Mississippi. Georgia Tech
is one of those middle-of-the-pack ACC teams that can jump up and bite an upper echelon one on any given week, and Boston College is in control of the Atlantic Division right now. Southern Mississippi didn't look like much in the beginning of the season, but after beating N.C. State last weekend, have to be paid at least a little
attention.
