A few years back, the ACC brought in Virginia Tech, Miami and Boston College in hopes of becoming a football superpower. Now, with the top programs rebuilding, little Wake Forest has become the best team in the much-maligned conference.

Commentary: When expansion came to the ACC, Florida State, Miami and Virginia Tech were supposed to put on yearly heavyweight battles for conference supremacy. With those schools dealing with rebuilding projects, coaching changes and quarterback controversies, a void has been created at the top.

Clemson appeared ready to fill the gap, but a humiliating loss to Alabama on national TV last Saturday has put the hot seat back under Tommy Bowden and thrust Wake Forest to the forefront of ACC championship discussions.

I’m not sure anyone could have predicted this a few years ago, but Jim Grobe has brought a unique offense, consistently tough defense and a winning mindset to Winston-Salem, N.C. Led by quarterback Riley Skinner, the Deacons are now carrying the mantle of marquee ACC program. ACC fans everywhere are hoping they don’t blow it against Ole Miss on Saturday.

Fan Pulse: Wake fans are feeling frisky, as many believe their team is now the favorite to win the ACC. A second conference title in three years would be an enormous accomplishment for the program.

Injury Watch: No significant injuries for the Deacons this week.
