Washington State announced the release of quarterback recruit Calvin Schmidtke from his letter of intent. The lone QB of the Cougars’ 2008 recruiting class has had numerous legal troubles for the past year and a half, most of which are alcohol- and drug-related.

"I understand the situation they're in. I knew for a couple of weeks (it was a possibility)," Schmidtke said of the circumstances. "Obviously, what happened wasn't pleasant. It was pretty tough. But I really think it's going to make me stronger."

The former Lakes High School (Lakewood, Wash.) player threw for over 2,700 yards and scored 37 touchdowns last year. He chose Washington State over Hawaii, Boise State and Colorado.

COMMENTARY: Terrible news for the Cougar program: Not only have they lost their only quarterback recruit for the 2008 class, but the team has yet to sign anyone at all for the 2009 class. This is definitely not a good start for new head coach Paul Wulff.
