Like just about everyone else in the Southeastern Conference, Auburn and Alabama were interested in a cat-quick quarterback from the coastal community of Daphne. They thought Pat White would make an excellent defensive back.

Quarterback? Uh, no -- a little too small. A little too inclined to run instead of throw. The type of kid who is a dime a dozen these days.

So they talked to Pat White about playing safety and cornerback, and he quietly nodded his head and kept his options -- no pun intended -- alive. It was West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez who finally recruited and accepted him as a quarterback, and so that's where he went. Last year, White rushed for 1,335 yards and 14 touchdowns and threw for 1,762 yards and 14 more TDs on behalf of the Mountaineers, earning Big East Offensive Player of the Year for the second straight season.

But here's the kicker. Now, for the second year in a row, the Alabama sportswriters have picked Pat White as the state's Amateur Athlete of the Year. Ouch.

White was also chosen as West Virginia Amateur Athlete of the Year, an almost unprecedented double. And Playboy named him the quarterback on its 2009 All-America team.

Meanwhile, West Virginia found another double-threat quarterback down around Mobile and offered him a scholarship, and Coley White accepted.

He's Pat's little brother.
