It hasn't been a good spring for former West Virginia football coaches.

The most recent to join that category, Rich Rodriguez, is still entangled in legal unpleasantness revolving around his abrupt departure for Michigan and how much he is owed from WVU (or vice versa). And on Tuesday, his successor -- Hall of Fame member Don Nehlen -- underwent triple bypass heart surgery in Morgantown.

It looks as if Nehlen might recover faster, though. He had the operation after flunking some routine tests and was said to be resting comfortably. (Is anyone ever "resting uncomfortably"?)

In 21 seasons at West Virginia, The Canton, Ohio, native posted a 149-93-4 record. His 1988 and 1993 teams went undefeated during the regular season.

Some published reports said that Nehlen experienced chest pains while playing golf last weekend, but son-in-law Jeff Hostetler -- a former Mountaineer and NFL quarterback -- said that was erroneous.
