Charlie Russell has never played in a football game for West Virginia University. Now, it appears, he never will.

The 6-foot-3, 210-pound redshirt freshman quarterback announced last week that he was quitting the team to devote more time to his studies. A biochemistry major, Russell plans ultimately to be a doctor.

Russell was a hometown hero who led Morgantown High School to a 38-3 record and two state titles. His departure leaves coach Bill Stewart with only two returning QBs, All-American Pat White and backup Jarrett Brown. A third, Bradley Starks, has been shifted to wide receiver (he caught a touchdown pass from White in the spring game), although Stewart said he will continue to attend quarterback meetings.
