People need to chill about Turner Gill

Auburn Tigers
‘Tis the season of Turner Gill, apparently. For every coaching fire, there is a hire that leaves confusion, anger and brash opinions painfully devoid of facts. At the risk of receiving hate mail from Charles Barkley, it must be noted that Buffalo's Turner Gill should not have been hired at Auburn, contrary to what every politically correct...

I'd like to hear some dissenting thoughts from readers/fans on this situation. Gill has been made out to be a martyr of sorts when anyone with his record would be overlooked for most jobs. What gives?

I think in Tuberville's case, they made their bed when they moonlighted with Petrino a few years ago. At that point, Tommy T was probably as unhappy as he was going to be. The bad thing is, he just signed an extension. Auburn did themselves NO favors when the AD went on ESPN and said he had "no idea" TT was leaving. For one, that's impossibly hard to believe. For two, if it is true...how bad does that make Auburn's program look? The AD doesn't even know what's going on?

I think people take things too far as far as hiring a black man in the SEC goes. Look at the other conferences. There's only been one black HC in the Big 10 (Bobby Williams) who didn't last but 3 years. I think people over-dramatize it because it's in the south. The bottom line is, coaches get hired in all areas based on what the guys doing the interview feel will be the best route to go. People were outraged when Ty Willingham was fired from Notre Dame after 3 years, but after the same time period at Washington...no one said a peep when he was ushered out. Why is that? Wins and losses. No one was talking racial injustice when Croom stepped down. They saw poor offense and not much overall success. I wish I could go deeper into this issue, because I think sometimes the SEC gets an unjustified bad rap with regards to some of the responses regarding Gill.

Plus, look at the coaches in the SEC recently hiried...an ex NFL coach (Kiffin). A guy with a national title on his resume (Saban). Another guy with one on his resume (Spurrier). A guy who led his former school in bowl appearances (Nutt). You're talking about major credential guys taking these jobs. Unless you have the experience, you need not apply in the SEC it seems.
