Not running Lynch enough keeps the Bills from running well

Buffalo Bills
One of the big three for the Buffalo Bills sets up the other two, and when that doesn’t happen the team ends up near zero. Suddenly, the most prominent members of the offense are unable to rush, pass or catch, and the collective failure centers on that no running part. Coaches are impatiently refusing to let Marshawn Lynch get to work, which ...

Dick, Turk and Perry - You have a chance to redeem yourselves Monday night. Help fans forget the last miserable month of Bills football. Keep it simple stupid, and get this team motivated somehow. It will give the Oaf-line a big boost of confidence if you set a goal of 100 yds rushing for Lynch and they actually help him do it. Allow no sacks on Edwards. Figure out a way to counter the short/quick pass that the Browns are going to try ad nauseum. Actually throw the challenge flag, not drop it at your feet in befuddlement. Manage the clock. Do something smart. And players - HIT somebody. Go Bills.

Today is the 20th anniversary of my greatest sports memory of all-time. Any guesses? Twenty years ago today the Bills beat the Jets 9-6 in Buffalo to win their 1st AFC East title under the Jim Kelly era. I remember like yesterday watching that game in my dorm room at the Univ of Florida. I was going crazy and my roomates thought I was insane. Fred Smerlas blocked a field goal attempt to keep the game tied, then Scott Norwood later hit the winning field goal. Fans stormed the field and tore the goal posts down at Rich Stadium. It was FANDEMONIUM in the words of Van Miller. A beautiful site. The front page of the USA today had a picture of Fred Smerlas holding up his hand and read "Block Fills the Bill." I wish I could go back in time and be there to tear down those mother 'ucking goalposts. I'm pumped up again just thinking about it. Ahhh, my favorite sports moment for eternity.

DDD, I was at that game and I watched them carry the goal posts past me towards Ralph's box. Twenty years ago? Man, time does fly!
I think the Bills started the Patriots game with the intention of establishing the run. Lynch and Jackson even made a few decent runs. But from what I saw it looked like they were doing it all on their own having to break tackles just to get back to the line of scrimmage. While I agree in principal that a back like Lynch should at least get 20 carries a game, this becomes a chicken and egg arguement. Last year we blasted Fairchild because of a run heavy offense. This season we're criticizing Schonert for not running enough. Do you keep pounding the ball even when your offensive line shows no apptitude for opening holes in the hopes of wearing down the defense while consistently getting yourself into 3rd and long situations or 3 downs and punt? Or do you hope you can open up the running game by establishing the passing game? Obviously in the Bills case neither seems to be working right now. If it were we wouldn't be complaining about how many carries Lynch is or isn't getting. Ideally you'd like to see some balance in the offense. But as the Bills proved when they couldn't convert 4th and 1 against the Jets, they can't run block worth a damn. Which makes the Bills offense one dimensional which is every defensive coordinators dream. Even last season when the OL did a great job pass blocking their run blocking sucked. This season they aren't doing either with any proficiency. The last time the Bills had a top caliber offensive line Kent Hull was the center and Will Wolford and House Ballard were the tackles. Just more proof of the incompetency that plagues the Bills organization that in over a decade of trying they can't put together a solid offensive line. And we all know it all starts with the guys in the trenches.
