For Bills’ Edwards, is Third Time a Charm?

Buffalo Bills
Before the dismal outing in Green Bay that cast a shadow of doubt over the entire offense, there was a healthy discourse amongst Bills fans as to whether Trent Edwards can step up and be the QB that the Bills so desperately need. Edward’s supporters almost uniformly cite the conventional wisdom that he is entering his magical 3rd year as an NFL ...

That's a lot of work E rock. Thanks. I've got to think about it some more. My immediate concern is that QB stats depend so highly on surrounding cast (on both sides of the ball), and on the coaching staff.

E-Rock, I compliment you on your well written, well researched article. Although I am somewhat confused as to why there was no new article yesterday and today we have an offering from both you and Goose?
As well researched as your article is I still don't buy into your hypothesis. Quarterbacks develop at different rates depending upon their own personal learning curve, the quality of the coaching they receive and the talent they have around them. I think all things being equal, in that they have the same coaching and the same or better talent to play with its reasonable to expect significant improvement in play from a 3rd year quarterback over a 2nd year quarterback. But again a quarterbacks development or at least proof in the form of improved production is limited by the guys drawing up the game plans he has to work with and the players he has on the field with him to help execute those game plans. I wonder if you had put Edwards in New England last season and Cassel in Buffalo would Edwards have duplicated Cassel's numbers and would Cassel have resembled Trent Edwards in a Bill's uniform?

E rock, great article better than Bialy or O'Connor could have posted. Last paragraph is the best....40 year olds in a college bar, yeah right. Wait, 40 is the new 20 right? Trent will continue to struggle against 3-4 defenses and is in one of the toughest divisions in the league in the AFC east. Put trent on the Seahawks and he may be a pro-bowler
