Buffalo Bills 2009 Unveiling

Buffalo Bills
Lately it seems like ridiculing the Bills has become an easy pastime. To say otherwise has become blasphemous and a demonstration by one to be ignorant of the facts. As the day draws near I find myself unable to suppress feelings of optimism. I watched the Detroit game yesterday and came away impressed. I know that shocks most of you, but ...

Bilzrok- a very well written piece. I wish I could get on the sunny side with you but like most of Bill's Nation I'm feeling blue as I watch the storm clouds gather in anticipation of the season opener. Steve Tasker is going to say good things about the Bills during preseason broadcasts because he's being paid by the Bills to do their games. Expecting him to be perfectly candid would be like expecting the Bills official website writer Chris Brown to be completely candid with his opinions. It ain't going to happen. They'll give you a little of what they're thinking but they aren't being paid to bad mouth the team and turn the fans off.
There is a lot of promise or potential in the young players the Bills have drafted but until it's proven performance it means nothing. Yeah, Maybin looked good in the preseason games he played in. So did Copeland with 2 sacks and 2 forced fumbles but Copeland got cut anyway because as you stated preseason games are meaningless and he isn't a million dollar bonus baby first round pick like Maybin. So it's a tad ingeneous to on one had write off the poor performance of the team in general as only the preseason and then point to the good plays of some players and try to use it as evidence that the team is better than they look. It's true the great Bills teams that Tasker played on didn't take the preseason seriously. They used it to find out who could make the few open roster spots on a team full of Pro Bowlers and future Hall of Famers. But the Bills have no proven Pro Bowlers (sans Moorman) and certainly no obvious future Hall of Famers. It would have been nice for them to demonstrate to themselves and their fans at least when the starters were playing that the team can compete against the opposing starters. If the preseason is so meaningless, why did it cost Turk Schonert his job? Face it this is a team in disarray and as the Schonert dismissal proves scrambling for answers. I'm thinking if the Patriots do to the Bills what most of us think they're going to do, Jauron could be looking for a new job by Columbus Day and Perry Fewell could end up as the interim head coach for the balance of the season.

I tend to agree with you Nate. If the preseason is a meaningless exercise for Dick, and they don't really care how they do vs the opponent (Dick is on record as saying the word "unprepared" for some games I believe) - then why would you fire your OCon the team 10 days before the opener? It's because they know deep down the offense was a shambles at the end of 2008 and the incompetence has carried over into 2009. Dick is scrambling for a solution on offense because he knows two things: they can't score, they turn the ball over and they can't sustain a drive - at least in the preseason. If that carries over into Monday night and beyond, the Bill's D will be on the field for 40+ minutes a game, the team will implode and Dick will be gone. What worries me most is that Dick and the coaches and Ralph all had a meeting last week, shared the kool-aid, and all came away happy! Happy about what exactly, that's what I want to know. I'll go back to optimism if the Bills keep it close and don't get blown out at the Pats - right now, no way. The defense is going to have to come up big next week, and every week.

I can still vaguely remember that 31-0 drubbing they placed on the Patsies a few years back, so I can only hope for something positive to start the season.
