After solid ‘06, what can Bills’ Losman do for an encore?

Buffalo Bills
Since entering the NFL as a first-round pick (22nd overall) in the 2004 draft, the Buffalo Bills' J.P. Losman has been one of the league's most highly scrutinized young quarterbacks. Whether what has seemed like downright disdain from fans and media comes from the California native's perceived cocky attitude or something else, it's safe to say...
What's the buzz about?

It's great to hear some positives about Losman and that he has looked great so far in OTA's. It would be nice to seem him silence some of the harsh critics that have blasted him the last couple of years. IT Always seemed to me that he was getting beaten up more than other 1st round qb's that got off to a shaky start. I can't wait for this year, Bills in 07.

The heat is always on a NFL QB until he proves that he can win consistently and stay on the field if he does (see D.McNabb). Even then, the heat can sometimes still be pretty intense--as good a J.Montana was, just ask him if he felt that the heat was on him when he had S.Young on the bench behind him! So, yes, the heat is on JP Losman to continue to improve and show the Bills coaches (and everyone else) that last year's improvement was no fluke and that their faith--in naming him the starting QB this season--is justified. Losman is going to have to prove that he can play well consistently, that he can win some games for the Bills that they have no business winning otherwise, and that he deserves to get a contract extension because he has demonstrated the kind of leadership and ability needed to take this team on an extended run as playoff contenders. But, funny enough, I think there is less heat on JP going into this training camp than last year when he was seriously in danger of losing his job with the Bills and the chance to be a starter in the NFL because management and the coaching staff did not know him or what he could really do and all they knew about him was all of the negative stuff that they heard about him from departing vets like Moulds, etc. and what they saw of his poor, almost amateurish play during the disastrous 2005 season when he was jerked around by M.Mularkey. At least going into htis season, Losman knows that he's going to have a job, what that job is going to be, and that the coaches and his teammates have confidence in him being able to do that job. And, that's a lot more than could be said either of the last two seasons. But, now, it is up to him to perform and get the job done right consistently--and prove that he deserves that job and that confidence going forward. And, in that regard, yes, the heat is on Losman as it should be.

Even though your article was somwhat positive for JP, I think it's somwhat off the mark. Yes JP looked good in OTS's but everyone looks good in helmets and no pads or hitting. I believe in JP to the extent that as far as the best QB in his class it comes down to JP & Rivers. This evaluation is from last year not an OTA when the bullets flew for real. If you need proof go to Houston and remember the last 2 minutes of the game. Moved the team from beyond midfield with one timeout all pass plays culminating with 15 seconds left a dart to Price in the back of the endzone game set match. Thats what excites me about this season. Also a bigger and faster Thurman in Marshawn is maybe the final piece in our offense. Just thinkin.
