Buffalo Bills
This is the second of a two-part series analyzing Buffalo's offensive and defensive rosters prior to its opener this Sunday against Denver. Today's piece will focus on the Bills' offense. Quarterback: Ever since Jim Kelly retired after the 1996 season, the Bills have been looking for their next franchise quarterback. Doug Flutie and Drew Bledsoe ...

First of all, Connor.. you fell into the same trap that everyone else has, with the same player in fact. Mel Fowler. Everyone knows he's not a good player. WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY????? Now, NO ONE knows that. I mean it, literally, NO ONE. I've heard it said a milliion times, and NEVER has anyone EVER said anything to back it up. If you do have SOME kind of clear evidence that you can cite, please delete my post, and add it to your article. If not.. then... don't state it to begin with ? All I've ever heard of are theoretical considerations: oh, he's too small(like kent hull, eh?) not even 300 lbs. Well, he's OVER 300, about 310, but no one ever bothered to check! Lol and OBviously, a guy like that will be "consistently overpowered at the point of attack". They'll bull rush him all day long, and Losman is toast. IS HE ?? WAS HE??? I show that he was responsible for 3 sacks last year. That's a disaster? Dockery had 3 against him as well.. oh, but he's well over 300lbs, so that's different?? I have extra difficulty with this, in that I don't live in WNY anymore, so I can't easily tape a game, and really look. But I will on Sunday, and if I find that Mr.Fowler is NOT destroyed by those BIG bad Broncos(and they ARE big), you'll be the first to hear about it. If he is, then you can cite that in future articles! ----- NOW then.. The offense has some "missing pieces": a really steady QB, a receiving TE, a strong 2nd WR. But I can't honestly view any of those as overwheming problems. We have at least, serviceable players at all those positions. If that line comes through... WELL, that is the one big if here, IMHO. They won't do it very soon of course, enduring wholesale changes, and having NEVER played together as a unit to date. But if they do get it together, this should start to be evident by midseason. IF that happens, it almost doesn't matter who the TE, and 2nd receiver are. Royal, Everett.. any of the 3 WR contenders will then have the time they need to get open, period. In this case, it's about that simple. J.P. can hit bombs while being strafed by an enemy blitzkrieg. Imagine what he could do with no one materializing prematurely in his face. THEN, we'd have an offense. And don't even ask what any of the backs, especially Lynch would do with a little running room. It could get downright scary. The Bills went out of their way trying to assemble a line that can operate effectively. You may see glimpses of such a result along the way. Or, maybe you could just start watching them play around midseason. I'm afraid I just don't have that sort of restraint. I expect them to founder badly out of the gate, and still can't desert my hometown boyz. If anyone else feels THAT way, than please post here to your(and MY) heart's content !!

Hey fox, Fowler is average at best. Go back and watch game tapes from last year and see him getting bullrushed. He was another average free agent signing when they could have drafted Mangold who is becoming a dominant center for the Jets.

Pretty fair assessment and you are right about Kevin Everett. It is hard to understand how the Bills cut Terrance Pennington who finished last season as a starter before Kevin Everett...who has one career catch? The weakest unit last year was the offense and should be improved at least in the running game, but the defense might have taken two steps backwards...
