Buffalo ought to pony up for underrated LB Crowell

Buffalo Bills
By this time next year, the Buffalo Bills could be poised to lose arguably their best defensive player, strongside linebacker Angelo Crowell. The five-year veteran, whom the Bills drafted in the third round in 2003, has just one season left on his deal. Frankly, it's a must for Buffalo -- particularly its deficient defense -- to begin speaking...

If he's in the last year of his deal doesn't that make Crowell a restricted free agent? If that's the case then his payday is coming sooner rather than later. He's a Dick Jauron kind of guy--hard working and fairly low key--and a solid LB so I expect Buffalo to get him an extension before free agency begins. If Buffalo doesn't extend him and he is a RFA my guess is that he'll receive some offers from other teams that the Bills would then have to match. It makes more sense to pay him before Suggs gets his monster deal.

The Bills definitely need to extend Crowell's contract this offseason, probably as much as Evans. He's our best player on defense and is certainly going to be nationally recognized very soon like Briggs. It's too often that we let our best players leave via free agency when they are just getting into their prime. No one who doesn't regularly follow the Bills know who the heck is on this team. They only know that they play hard. It's time that this team develops some kind of identity and continuity. Ralph has the cash.

Connor is correct that Crowell should be retained and i think he surely will be. The coach is going to push for defensive dominance and put the offense on life support, as he has done in the past when it was within his control. I saw that Marv Levy tried to draft for both sides of the ball, and mixed that up with his free agency acquisitions. Now, the defense will dominate. While that does not sell tickets, great defenses do win championships. Need proof that i am correct? Holy Crap! Turk Shonert is the OC! 2008 should be a good year for football in Buffalo because i think the O will overachieve and the D will be much improved. Watch out for a couple of key D line acquisitions and a D focused draft.
