San Diego signed veteran defensive end Luis Castillo a five-year, $43.1 million extension Tuesday, keeping him with the Chargers through 2014. Castillo, the 28th pick in the 2005 draft, will receive $17.1 million guaranteed. This was a semi-risky move. I trust AJ's instincts, but that's a lot of money for a guy with lingering ankle problems. He's a really good player, nimble and aggressive, but his backup Jacques Cesaire (who was also knocked out of that Minnesota game) is also very good, particularly in pass defense.

I hope this doesn't mean they're going to dump Igor Olshansky. I kind of wish they had signed Igor first, as he's much better than his earning ability (Olshansky is more of a run-stopper than a pass-rusher, so he doesn't rack up the stats), and would command less money. But if they can't find a replacement for Jamal Williams and have to go to a 4-3, Igor goes from cheap and versatile starter to overpriced tweener in a San Diego second (which is comparable to a New York minute). So I guess I understand. I just hope they extend him a year or two.

Castillo is a vital part to this 3-4 defense. Chargers will easily win the AFC West.

Yeah they will, the only team that can maybe give them a run for their money is the Broncos.
