A reponse to Tommy Bowden supporters

Clemson Tigers
A column of mine from last week concerning Clemson head coach Tommy Bowden created quite a stir among Tigers fans. Thus far, that stir has entailed 16 posts in our “comments” area here at RealFootball365.com and apparently a chain of angry posts on TigerNet. Though I was the target of some of these comments, I must say that I love the passion...

Sorry Chris, but it seems that you fail to grasp the unspoken religious bigotry of most Bowden backers. It's not about on-field performance or ACC titles. It's about religion. If Bowden weren't a shirtsleeve Christian, they'd have booted him years ago. Clemson booted Ken Hatfield after four years even though Hatfield won an ACC title and had a higher winning percentage (.711) than Bowden (.622)-- not to mention an even higher percentage than Bowden's first four years (.592). Bowden could go 7-5 for the next 5 years and they wouldn't can him-- especially if they have to buy him out for $2M or more. Hopefully, he'll win an ACC title and we'll never find out.

Sorry Razmataz but Hatfield was a shirt sleeve Christian as well so there must be another reason.

Chris, you still miss the point. Since 1991 Clemson has not been favored to win the ACC. They have been favored to win their division but not the ACC. The poster you talk about was specifying a favorite to win the ACC. He is correct. There is only 1 team who will be favored to win the ACC each year so to say “year in and year out, the Tigers are among the preseason favorites to win the ACC title," is totally inaccurate. Only 1 team can be the favorite. Others can be contenders. As far as Bowden's success at Clemson is concerned, success is measured on more than just record (i.e. on the field). It is also measured off the field and Tommy and his staff have done a great job mentoring his players off the field and therefore making them assets to society and not liabilities like many programs out there. This year the Tigers are favored to win the ACC and I expect the Tigers to do just that but if they fall short I will continue to support the team.
