With McDaniel, Bowden’s right to exercise patience

Clemson Tigers
Clemson head coach Tommy Bowden is doing a good job of keeping the principle that one is innocent until proven guilty in mind as he deals with the recent arrest of safety DeAndre McDaniel. McDaniel, a 20-year-old who had 33 tackles, two interceptions and five passes defensed last season as a true freshman, was charged last weekend with assault...

I agree he should be allowed to remain on the team until he is tried and convicted. To many times players both college and pro have be accused if crimes and later fond not guilty. SO Bowden wait it out after all Our constitution does declare his innocents until proven guilty.

Guilty! Not McDaniel. Me! Just like in the Duke lacrosse team "rape" case, I'm guilty of prematurely believing the girl's story. However, now that I've read McDaniel's side, and the following witness statements, I suspect that the truth lies somewhere between-- and perhaps a lot closer to McDaniel's side of the story. I'm guessing that the girlfriend verbally and physically attacked McDaniel because he traded numbers with another girl at a nightclub. And he probably defended himself and retaliated, mostly just trying restrain her and carry her out of the apartment, but causing some minor injuries in the process. I'm guessing that both of them share responsiblity and wish they'd have handled it differently. I'm guessing that neither party deserves to have their life ruined at age 20.

Some things don't make sense. If he didn't do it, then why does she have injuries? (Then again, how bruised and sprained?) If the 6' 200lb, athlete really wanted hurt the petite 5'1" accuser, wouldn't her injuries be far worse? If he was such a threat, why didn't she leave when given the opportunity? Why would he "begin choking her while jerking her head up and down"? (I have hard time picturing that combination in a serious assault.) And if he wanted to choke her to death, wouldn't she be dead?

It's summertime, so there's no need for Clemson to take action yet. There's time to get it right.

Absolutely. Teams that suspend players during the summer aren't really affecting anything anyway. If there is more evidence by late August, then I suspect a suspention <sp> will be handed down.
