Clemson midseason review: it’s over

Clemson Tigers
At this point, there’s no way to argue that Clemson head coach Tommy Bowden should be retained until the end of the season -- he needs to be shown the door now. Last week's 12-7 loss to Wake Forest and the subsequent move to replace quarterback Cullen Harper with Willy Korn are more rotten cherries on top of this decade of undeniable...

The tailspin continues, as it will for the next several games. The WF loss sucked a LOAD of confidence away from the Tigers. The look in Cullen Harper's eyes sitting on the bench near the end of the Deacon game was ominuosly sad. He looked like a player that had lost total confidence in himself, and his team's ability, and it isn't his fault. It is the coaching staff's fault. Tommy B. has held this program in "middle-of-the-road" hostage for almost 10 years, and his reign will end at the season's end. With certain improvements in Virginia and South Carolina's squads, it is becoming scarily clear that there are only two games remaining on Clemson's schedule that they can win: Duke and Florida State. (I just don't think Bobby Bowden will try to win that one. He will attempt to throw out the life preserver in the high waters one more time for his son). However, it won't do TB any good. With the potential of a 6-6 or 5-7 record with so much talent and expectations on the field( which appears to be imminent), the question is now not a matter of whether TB will stay, but of matter of WHO will replace him. There have been rumors about Lane Kiffin, Muschamp, etc. in the masses. In my mind, there are only two men available that can take Clemson to the summit of college football elite teams, and those individuals are Chris Peterson (Boise St.) and Bill Cowher (formerly of the Pittsburgh Steelers). Cowher is probably a very long-shot, but Peterson is an excellent opportunity for the Tigers. If I am the Clemson hierachy, I would keep an eye on this man for the remainder of the season. Boise is again on-track to get to another BCS at-large bowl. I am convinced that if he is hired, and inheriting talents like the Bowers' the Ellingtons, Harpers and such, Clemson will be playing in the Fiesta Bowl or Sugar Bowl in his second season, and possibly for the National Title.

All I can say after the news flash is INCREDIBLE!!! I did predict that this would be Tommy Bowden's last season at Clemson a week ago, but I never believed it would happen so soon. I don't know much about Dabo Swinney, and perhaps he can salvage the season for Clemson (what's left of it). I do believe that
a call for a high-profile, proven coach is in order after the 2008 season, no matter what happens the rest of the way. Clemson football has finally been delivered for the chains of the "barely get along alley" lot,
and now, with the talent present at Tigertown, it is time to scan the nation for a bonafide head coach who can take this program where TB couldn't. I will give Tommy Bowden his props for upgrading the facilities and bringing in good players. He deserves that much respect in spite of his lack of coaching skills. I hope he lands a position more suitable to his personality and coaching level. now, with that said,
this is something that had to happen: For the Clemson football factory to move to higher plateaus, it simply was paramount for a change. Some are saddened, and some are elated, but whatever the
feelings and attitudes regarding this event, I believe Clemson football will be the better for it.

I'm going to say something that has never before been said on a college football blog. Are you ready?

I was WRONG!

I never thought that Clemon would fire Bowden after just signing a $4M buy-out a few months earlier. But I was WRONG. Well... actually it seems that Bowden agreed not to soak the university for the full $4M, and instead he took just $2.3M. So I wasn't completely wrong. But close enough. I've never been so happy to be wrong.
