| DUMB HIRE, DUMB HIRE, DUMB HIRE: Before I give my FINAL blog to Clemson Football, I would like to say this: I have loved following the Tigers with a white-hot fervency since the 1981 Championship year, and the decade of brilliance (1982-1991) that followed it. Those years seem so long ago now, yet, the firing of Tommy Bowden kindled a glimmer of hope that possibly, it could occur again after so many frustrating years since that time. Three "average" head coaches have been hired since the departure of Danny Ford, and the program hasn't been the same since. 17 years of frustration I've encountered as a Clemson follower and ardent fan, and this season of 2008 gave me hope that Clemson was finally ready to go outside the box and hire a proven coach who would take them to the national prominence they once enjoyed for a short period. The hiring of Dabo Swinney clearly sent a strong message me as a college football fan that 1)Clemson will never reach the level of the 80s again, and 2) the AD, Board of Trustees, the BLIND fans and the players of this program are dumb enough to believe that Mr. Swinney will take Clemson to glory. you can cheer, moan, groan and die for a program's success, but you can't fix STUPID. This is a stupid, small-minded program that doesn't want to go any further than it has gone for the past 17 years, and I won't follow, or be a part of, or be a fan of it any longer. Enough foolishness is enough. Most college programs across the USA base their success on beating The Univ. Of Southern Cal., the REAL USC-----not the lowly Gamecocks. At any rate, this is how small-minded Clemson is, and this type of low self-esteem will keep this program where it is now, a non-respected, middle-of-the road program for years to come. So relish your second-class bowls, your lack of conference titles, and and your wins over South Carolina, and continue to watch the TRUE national programs laugh at you (like Alabama's doing). Hiring Dabo Swinney as your coach was as unintelligent a move as firing Tommy Bowden, for it really served NO purpose. You might as well as kept him, because it appears the same man was hired in a different body. I am DONE with Clemson Football. I will not follow a program that refuses to excel, and if the author (Mr. Hudgens), is a smart man, he'd drop them too. This is my FINAL word. So Long. | ||

| NB: Don't leave us. We need you! I would have rather seen a big name hire, like Butch Davis. A statement. A commitment to success. I just think it's going to be hard for Swinney to attract top coaches and top recruits because they will view him as an unproven, potential short-timer. But if I can suffer 9.5 years of the Bowden regime, I guess I can give Swinney a year. It's already a lot better watching Clemson now than it was watching Spence waste talent and Bowden look ill on the sidelines. Marc: On Sunday, 11/30/08, ESPN.com reported that Clemson hired Swinney. Nice job predicting the past. :-) | ||

| Tough hire, aside from the last game against South Carolina, Clemson's offensive numbers weren't any better with Dabo than they were with Tommy B earlier in the season. His rocket science theory of "hey, give CJ Spiller the ball more!" could have been pulled from Any Message Board, USA. Where's he going to get a staff? What kind of guys are going to come in and work under a former WR coach? Seems like this was a knee jerk hire based on a big rivalry win. Not unlike giving Chuck Weis 10 years after barely losing to Southern Cal.... | ||
