Clemson Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney wrapped up spring football by talking to the media last Wednesday. He spoke about the quarterback battle, the receiver position and what he gained out of having his staff visit Mack Brown at Texas. But he also talked about C.J. Gents, we've heard all this before. For the last three to four years, Clemson has supposedly had enough talent at the skill positions to have chance at the ACC title. It is a certain, yet simple fact that in order to have a GREAT program, you must hire great coaches. If you review all of the great programs in Div. I over the last 50 years( Alabama, Oklahoma, Michigan, Notre Dame(until recently) USC, and others who are considered elite programs, you will find that these programs have consistently hired great head coaches. When ND decides again to hire a great head coach, it will rise again. Clemson has had only two head coaches that you could vagly consider great, and that was Danny Ford (and it is no coincidence that he is the only coach at Clemson to win a national title). Other than he and John Heisman, Clemson has not hired any legitmate "great" coaches in their long football history. It is no accident that Tiger fans have to suffer through "average" teams year after year regardless of the talent level: Without great leaders, you will have no greatness. Dabo Swinney is at best an average coach, period. Until Clemson does what Alabama did in finally hiring a Nick Saban type, they will continue to wallow in the muck of 7-5 heaven, along with a cheap bowl( Get your Champs Sports or Peach Bowl tickets ready). Tennessee will learn this brutal lesson as well with Lane "Punk" Kiffin. Let it be known: Great head coaches are the recipe for great programs, and you do indeed get what you pay for.
