Ask any defensive coordinator in the NFL how important an effective pass rush can be. It forces quarterbacks to make quick decisions that can lead to turnovers, and it disrupts the timing of an offense. Last season, the Cowboys' defense racked up 34 sacks, 11½ of which belonged to star linebacker DeMarcus Ware. The next highest total was 4½...

A couple of quick points, Ellis's injury was not to his knee and once Greg Ellis had shown he was making the adjustment to OLB, Carpenter spent the bulk of his time at ILB.

An achilles tendon is not a knee injury. However, this is the toughest injury to recover from as evidenced by Dan Marino that had the same injury and when he came back his calf muscles were noticeably deformed from lack of exercise. What affected Dan the most was his lack of mobility. Will Ellis have the same problem? Historically, on average the teams with higher sack totals win Superbowls so you are right that Ware needs help so he is not double teamed during the season.

I guess in a way, the Dallas Run Defense had to wait a year for full form with the loss of bobby carpenter and greg ellis. Darn, its good news for Cowboys fans to get them back, especially with HC Phillips, but man I'll hate to see the Texans play them in the preseason... Ware, Spears, Spencer, Ellis, Carpenter, Ferguson and the Roy show are going to be nasty.
