Dolphins probably won’t get a game-changer with 25th pick

Miami Dolphins
Now that the dust has settled on the Miami Dolphins’ improbable 10-game improvement from 2007 to last season, the issues at hand remain the fate of Bill Parcells and April’s NFL draft. The Dolphins tied the biggest turnaround in NFL history by improving from 1-15 in 2007 to 11-5 last year. And while Miami and first-year coach Tony Sparano have...

Hey Jeff,

While I agree with you that it won't be exciting as last year. I do believe it is all about scouting the player you pick. There have been tons of players pick after that who are game-changers. Ray Lewiis, Randy Moss & Ed Reed were what picks and I can go on and on here. Plus with all the Juniors coming out this year I think it will be a great year for the draft and the Dolphin can get a game breaker. Look at last year with not one WR taken in the first round, and we can probably pick up a good one with the 25th pick. I don't think it is going to happen with Parcells and believe he will pick a LB or DT. That has been his m.o. But I have faith in Ireland and his draft process.

In my 60 years I have seen more failures out of the #1 draft pick position than I care to think about. On the other hand, I recall Dolphin "late" picks named DAN MARINO , Mark Duper , Mark Clayton etc. people get wrapped up in the highly touted college kids who are often the beneficiaries of good PR departments, or who are suited for college but not the pro's. (Rick Norton, anyone?). On the other hand, there are great players out there who for any of a thousand reasons played for some small and obscure program. The same thing happens in other sports. Take a look at the Detroit Red Wings. Their best players were drafted incredibly late (Zetterberg was something like #269, same for Datsyuk) . The secret is good scouting and a willingness to go "dumpster diving" for out of the mainstream talent.

Sensi, I agree that there have been valuable players drafted late in the first round. This was just an idea of the type of players who have been drafted at that position in recent years. Marc, the Dolphins have definitely have some good luck with draft picks who weren't top-10ers, and with Parcells in charge (hopefully!) of the process, I'm not betting against him. You would be hard-pressed to find a better evaluator of talent than the Big Tuna.
