What’s the story with not grabbing Torry in free agency?

Miami Dolphins
It seems like a foregone conclusion that the Miami Dolphins are going to take a wide receiver with one of their first four draft picks next month. No matter what receiver the Dolphins choose, it is going to take them a few seasons to adapt to the speed and schemes of the NFL. A way that Miami could make up for that transition period is by bringing ...

My mostly uneducated guess is, the price is wrong. I assume Holt is comfortable with what he has been making and though I agree he still has a lot to offer, he is certainly past his prime and that painful reality may not have caught up to the budget center of his brain yet, especially with multiple teams interested in him and the presumably attached "highest bidder" situation.
Another thing to consider is that Marvin Harrison also looked like he had something left in the tank (I even heard the term ageless floated a few times) until very suddenly, he didn't. Will Holt slowly drift to earth after a few more productive seasons, or will he similarly fall off a cliff and if so, could that happen this year? It seems to me Holt would be a short term, calculated gamble and using him as both a stopgap and justification for waiting until day 2 to draft a WR, runs a fairly high risk of returning the Phins to square one on this issue at this time next season. I mean obviously superstars regularly emerge from the later rounds (and likewise, on day 1, busts happen) but you have to operate under the assumption that the scouts know their business and most if not all of the legitimate #1 NFL WRs will go on day 1.
I guess it also depends on whether or not you believe Miami is a legitimate contender this year. If you do then Holt on a short term deal might indeed be a good answer. If not, then the build for the future at the expense of the present mentality has to extend to WR as well. In that case I'd say leave Holt to the mob, take a top 10 prospect, maybe even the 1st round pick if the right name is still there (and passing on Holt gives a minor secondary benefit there as it presumably takes whichever team snags him, out of the competing pool of those also looking high in the draft for WRs), let him go through the rookie curve and then ideally, WR isn't even a concern for 2010.

I have absolute confidence in Sporano, Ireland, and Parcells. If snagging Holt, or any one of a number of high profile, yet "best years behind them" receivers was in our best interests, then we no doubt would have had at least given them a workout. It's collecting "names" that has hurt so many teams around the league. I like the approach we now use - collect "talent."

There is some value in acquiring a receiver with experience even if he is on the backside of his career. There is much to be gained from his experience and instruction for the young guys. Currently the fins have no one with Holt's big game experince. I imagine his price tag was too high and that moved the Dolphins into another direction for receivers. Does make one think twice about the Wilford acquisition...I still can't figure that one out.
