Cameron, Cleo and the great fan divide

Miami Dolphins
Monday was one of the surreal days that makes you appreciate being a sports columnist and a sports enthusiast in general. Why? Because for just the second time in my journalistic career, it became brutally apparent that virtually all fans and media members base their logic on purely self-centered and egocentric assertions. Yesterday, Miami...

I read your article last week citing reasons why it would be justified to sit John Beck a couple of more weeks. I didn't necessarily agree, but I see the point that was trying to be made.

I can't say I'm hurling offensive remarks around and bashing the organization, as apparently so many other fans are, but they make a good point.

The hope for even a wild card spot is gone. Cleo Lemon, a free agent next year, has had several games to show what he has. Sadly, he's right around what Trent Green was doing before he suffered another severe (And let's face it, folks, career-ending injury...) concussion.

So? No playoffs. Several games to confirm that Cleo Lemon is indeed a journey man. And a second round investment on someone that may or may not be the future of the franchise?

If all hope is lost for this season it is the time to start letting the rookies and younger players get some snaps, to evaluate their worth to the organization.

Beck deserves a chance to start. Oh, and by the way, Cleo Lemon hasn't produced any wins for us this season. It may be selfish of the Miami fans to voice their opinion. But remember, ultimately, we foot the bill for all of this. I don't see how our season could get much worse with John Beck at quarterback, and apparently, most Dolfans agree with me.

Because Miami will have a top five draft pick in the 2008 Draft, Beck needs to play sooner rather than later so that the coaches (not the media or fans) can figure out if Beck can be the QB of the future. If they don't believe Beck can be the man after a few live games against some decent defensive teams (NE, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, etc.), then Miami should draft a QB in the first round next year because there should be a few decent names on the board when Miami picks.

The fact that Beck is 26 should play a little role, but it should be overplayed because good QBs can be productive well into their 30s.

I said it last week and I'll say it again. I'm selfish and I want Beck to play just to have something to look forward to!
