More questions than answers greet Parcells

Miami Dolphins
So Bill Parcells is now aboard the Miami Dolphins' ship as executive vice president in charge of football operations. Isn't that a little like rowing out to assume command of the Titanic just after it hit the iceberg? Obviously not. Parcells is a smart -- if not always congenial -- man, and the odds are slim that he would cast his lot with a...

Here a few questions:

Should the Dolphins trade Jason Taylor for draft picks? Taylor will be 34 soon but he will be coming off another one-man wrecking crew performance in the 2nd half of the season that got him a Pro Bowl spot. Taylor plays with passion and deserves to play for a team that is one to two players away from being very good (read: not Miami).

Can Ronnie Brown recover from his injury? Please keep in mind that Brown has never gone through a full season unhurt. Brown was playing lights out before he got hurt, but he isn't exactly durable. Can Miami depend on Booker and Williams as back up plans? Probably not.

Is John Beck the starting QB? So far, the answer is far from positive but every rookie QB (with the exception of Dan Marino) struggled. Let's see if Beck can improve with a full offseason. Lemon seems like an ok 2nd string QB. But, every good team has a good QB. The Ravens team that won the Super Bowl with Dilfer is the only exception and let's hope Miami won't try to imitate them.

Can Ted Ginn be a legitimate number 1 WR like a Marvin Harrison or a Terry Glen? He has the speed but he needs to learn the position.

Here's the laundry list: defensive linemen, cover corners, offensive guards, a pass catching TE (think Bavaro, Watson, and Witten in Parcells' previous teams), a number 1 or number 2 WR (depending on Ginn), and here's a shocker: a QB!

As far as rookie QBs go, Big Ben did alright in Pittsburgh. Brad Johnson got a Super Bowl ring and I don't think anyone considers him much more than a journeyman QB. Ditto for Jim Plunkett, who was a 52% passer with the exception of his two championships in Oakland. The Bears made the Super Bowl last year on the strength of a very good defense. Clearly, the road to the Super Bowl is considerably smoother with strong QB play, but it's not impassable with only an adequate signal caller.

A good QB is essential. Bill Belichick was an average coach before he hooked up with Tom Brady. Big Ben had a good first year but he had very good run support, receivers, offensive line, and defense. Troy Aikman, Steve Young, and Peyton Manning did not have them in their first year and they all did awful.
