Reid’s bluffing hasn’t helped Eagles

Philadelphia Eagles
If Andy Reid never chose football as his life's path, the Philadelphia Eagles coach would have made a heck of a poker player. Reid can look you dead in the eye and tell you, convincingly, that the Birds don't need help at the wide receiver position. It's the kind of bluff Phil Hellmuth would be envious of. Of course, Reid's claim is pure...

The thing is all those players were drafted by their respected teams and both Chad Johnson and Anquan Boldin were second round picks. The issue has really been the unwillingness and inability to draft wide receivers in the draft, especially in the earlier rounds. The one year they did the Eagles ended up with Freddie Mitchell with the 25th pick in 2001 and passed up Reggie Wayne (30), Chad Johnson (36), and Chris Chambers (52). You can say they never go after the big free agents, but at that point you are paying 10 million for either a guy in his late 20's or early 30's to play during the decline of his career or a headcase. It might be too late at this point, but if they were more willing to draft good wide receivers in the first two rounds this city would have a Super Bowl with McNabb.

To be fair, the Eagles have spent recent high draft picks on Reggie Brown and DeSean Jackson. No they have not picked a WR in the 1st rd since Fred Ex, but who can blame them?

Maybe they've spent high draft picks, but that doesn't stop them from making a big move for a veteran. They still have a need at a number one WR. I mean, we all know the story of the Lions recent first-round WR's but this team needs to do something to go deep in the playoffs.
