Jacksonville Jaguars
"I'm fine," emailed Daunte Culpepper after his involvement in an auto accident, and Jacksonville Jaguars fans, high on speculation that the QB may be heading there soon, are relieved. Why? Let us count the ways. They are three, and they have names. Reason No. 1, Byron Leftwich. Seemingly still the penciled-in starter (and, boy, that pencil is ...

i think the J's would be wise to pick him up. he can be had cheap & is a proven bull. upside greater than downside: has another 7-8 years of play left, if his knee holds up & i think it will

Why are you using 2004 to support your argument with how bad Leftwich supposedly is? Total points scored in 2004 was bad, but how about 2005 and 2006? I'll do the math for you:

2005: 12th out of 32 teams
2006: 9th out of 32 teams

The improvement so far he's made with Coach Shula and Koetter is being praised by Del Rio and others. Del Rio went so far as to say this will be Byron's breakout year. He's never had an endorsement like that for Byron before.

You also forgot to mention the wrong Quinn (and I'm not talking about Brady Quinn, who is currently far down the depth charts). I'm talking about Quinn Gray. In my opinion, I would take him over Garrard and Culpepper at this point. He certainly has more upside.

I think your confused as to what the Jaguars are trying to do here. You should read my post in the forum section under the culpepper headline. But, I'll give you a quick breakdown. They dont want Culpepper for this year. They want him for next year. Let him rehab and learn and you can evaluate him for a year. You never even mentioned the Tice connection, which should be a huge factor in the decision. Finally, the root of all NFL evil. Money. Your getting a pro bowl talent for second or third string money. The deal is stuck on culpepper renegotiating his contract. The misconception is that your not taking culpepper to be the starter. Your signing a high profile back up. If your a fan of the Jags, I would be real excited. This move has the potential upside of setting your team up well for the next five years on the field and in the front office with the potential downside of having to cut a back up QB. Sounds smart to me.
