San Francisco 49ers
The biggest storyline of the San Francisco 49ers’ preseason has centered on who will start at quarterback when the regular campaign opens next month. I agree 100% with this article, esp. the last line. I still believe Alex Smith can be an alright QB in this league, the guy has really had 0 talent around him (at WR) and maybe now at least with Martz he can show off his arm that got him to be a number 1 pick.

Thanks Eric. This article keeps my "insane-o-meter" from heading to the red zone. It echos my sentiments exactly. Your second to last paragraph is the thing I notice in all of the games. The 49ers this preseason score when Alex is behind center. Combine that with him protecting the ball, and some good defense, and you get a very good chance for wins this seaon. (I'm sure that means he'll throw some picks this Thursday...)

I do feel, however, that if he can't cut the mustard, he should be on a short to medium sized leash. The Western division is very wide open, and the playoffs are a few good plays away.

Oh, and on Alex's development, he will have to be conservative, and expand his aggressiveness as the season goes on...

Smith should be the starter but Nolan might see something different the team has never had good skilled players around them to often to help this guy out.
