San Francisco 49ers
The first overall pick in the 2005 NFL draft, the San Francisco 49ers' Alex Smith, recently restructured his contract, setting up a showdown with Shaun Hill for the starting quarterback position. While Smith has the physical tools, Hill holds a significant advantage in intangibles. When Hill has been on the field in the past, the 49ers have won. ...

I have never commented on any post, but the things you guys say are hilarious. You say Smith's deal "current deal is now aligned with his true market value." How is that? You also say "While Hill has likely maxed out his ability, Smith still has upside." How do you know Hill has maxed out? He can keep improving like anyone. Have you ever played any sports?

Correction: Alex Smith's rookie season was 2005, and his break out season was 2006 (not 2007 as was written in the article above). He then spent 2007 battling injury, followed by the 2008 season in which he was completely out.
Just a minor correction from a die-hard fan. But good article.
I think/hope Smith will show significant improvement this year with his new "no pressure" contract ;)

I also agree with pwmartin that Im not sure how close to the true value Smith's new contract is. I've read that he is going from around $9 million/year to around $3 million/year. As much as I have hope for Smith, I'm really not sure he's even worth that right now. Hill is getting under $2 million. I know Smith was #1 overall, but so was Ryan Leaf, Courtney Brown, Tim Couch, etc, etc...I'd say smith is worth half that.
