San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers, in search of a new stadium for a while, could soon call Santa Clara, Calif., home. The 49ers currently reside in the unfriendly confines of Candlestick Park, a facility that’s severely outdated. Although the move wouldn’t happen until 2014, it would mark a changing of the guard for the Niners. The 49ers have been...

Sorry, but 40 miles is not "nearby" and trying to relate the Arizona Cardinals' move from Tempe to Glendale is flimsy at best.

Perhaps a better and more fitting analogy for the Niners is to look south at what happened to the Rams. In 1980, they moved "nearby" to Anaheim, about 30 miles away. That team lost its soul to indifferent fans from Orange County and was gone (albeit for a variety of reasons) to St. Louis by 1995. The Niners may not ultimately abandon Santa Clara, but they will most definitely lose their soul. Be careful what you ask for....

It's universally agreed that Candlestick has outlived its usefulness as a viable NFL facility and a move is therefore necessary. If the City can come up with a realistic and viable option at Hunters Point, the team would be foolish to leave for the South Bay. The big question remains: Can SF make a goal-line stand at 4th and inches?

It's roughly 30 miles from Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe (where the Cardinals used to play) to University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale. It's even further away from their headquarters and practice facility in Tempe.

Tempe and the surrounding Phoenix area wouldn't commit to a new stadium in Arizona. Glendale did and it seems to be a very similar situation to the Niners possibly moving to Santa Clara.
