Green Bay Packers
It could be like this all year for the Green Bay Packers: with every top-of-the-line acquisition comes two personnel losses, with every fresh contract a departing vet. Last week, the Pack took a hit to their offensive line when Kevin Barry suffered what is in all probability a season-ending injury. Barry is a four-year man out of Arizona and was...

The interior of the Packer line is not noticeably improved, at this point, over what they had last year. Barry was probably a long shot to start at guard considering his weight and how he doesn't really fit the new scheme, but he was a reliable backup at right tackle and that'll be missed.

Green Bay is probably going to start two guards who've never taken an NFL snap, and two of the primary interior backups are also guys who've never taken an NFL snap. Scott Wells is not an upgrade over a healthy Mike Flanagan but Flanagan wasn't healthy the last two years anyway.

The line was not as terrible last year as some people want to portray it, but it's hard for me to look at this year's line and see how it's been improved.

Kevin Barry is the "cornerstone in a new format for the line for 2006"? Maybe in a power-eating contest. He will be sorely missed in the buffet line.

I've always had great hopes for Kevin Barry as a Wisconsin native, but he just doesn't seem to have it. Yes, the U71 package from the season before last worked well, but it worked well because the 5 regular linemen were arguably the best unit around. Without Rivera and Whale, KB just didn't step up last year when he had the chance - it's not necessarily a blame thing. I don't know the troubles he might have been having.

I just know that the line started coming together late last season allowing for 100 yard performances from Samkon Gado, and Barry wasn't much a part of it.

He has my best hopes for recovery and a long, healthy career, but I'm not betting the farm on it.
