The 27th ranking against the rush is a little misleading. Because Green Bay usually managed to dig a hole by turning it over (45 turnovers last year), teams were able to stick with the rush even when it wasn't working very well. In fact, up until about the half way point of the season last year the Packers had one of the better yards/rush defenses out there. But any defense will crack if you can just keep pounding it.

The Tampa Bay game last year was illustrative of this. The Bucs running game was averaging about 3 yards/carry and the Cadillac was being contained, but 4 turnovers ensured that the Bucs could just keep running it and they did. Eventually, Cadillac broke a couple longer runs and so the record shows he had a big day, but really he had a lot of 1-3 yard carries and two longer ones when the defense was worn down.
