Five-TD win doesn’t answer questions

New England Patriots
It's amazing how just a little five-touchdown win can change public perception. Heck, those who were picking apart all that was wrong with the New England Patriots before the navy blue-and-silver boys methodically had their way with the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau are backing down faster than the FOX decision-makers who gave "If I Did It" the...

my theory on the testaverde pick-up is that he will be acting as 3rd string q.b./quarterback coach.
after all, he was loved by belichick in cleveland and q.b. coach Josh McDainels was promoted to offensive coordinator leaving the pats with no q.b. coach.
that's my two cents anyway. there is the possibility he was brought in simply to kneel on the ball in the fourth quarter. have you ever seen anyone get such a thrill out of kneeling on the ball? go vinny!

A few things...

The Patriots are 7-3, not 6-3...

A statistic that in my opinion gets overused is the combined record of opponents. Those records are inherently skewed because they include the defeats the Patriots inflicted upon them. Therefore in my opinion the combined record (excluding the Patriots) in the six games you mentioned is 26-28, a much more realistic barometer...

The D-Line is probably better than the LB group that you extolled, although the LBs are excellent. Seymour, Wilfork, and Warren are the main reason why the Pats have the 2nd best defense in the NFL in points allowed -- the only defensive stat that really matters, considering the game is all about scoring more points than your opponent...

The Branch thing is long over, and that's coming from a NE fan. The Patriots consistently make personnel decisions that make players, agents, and other GMs squirm. Best of luck to Branch and to the Seahawks. The trench positions (OL and DL) matter more than the skill positions- always have and always will. The Patriots understand and implement this philosophy as well as any team in the NFL...

The point about the inscrutability of this team is right on. It's impossible to get a read on them, and you're dead on that this week's game will tell us all we need to know. As you pointed out, the remaining schedule after the Bears game is pretty easy. (Editor's note: Thanks for the catch on the Patriots' record. The article has been corrected to reflect your feedback.)
