Cable changes nothing, nothing changes overnight in Oakland

Oakland Raiders
Another one in this dismal 2008 Oakland Raiders season is in the books, as is the first game of the Tom Cable era, and it seems as though the profoundly deep problems ain’t gonna disappear overnight. Indeed, after an admirably defensive-minded first-quarter performance, the Raiders’ game appears to have devolved a half-step or so. Nothing Oakland ...

Paul,

I cannot believe you went there blaming Kiffin when you so UN-eloquently stated: "I believe Russell threw so many arrant balls because of Kiffin's advise regarding the Saints defense." Get over it!!! This game was clear, the offense was even worse than when Kiffin was at the helm. New Orleans, were without key players on defense and have given up an average of 26 points and we only managed 3 lousy points!!! We had two Friggin' weeks to game-plan for New Orleans and this is what Cable and Knapp came up with? And some of you blamed Kiffin solely (last time I checked Knapp and Cable worked on the offense too while Kiffin was here)... Seriously, you should give back your UCLA degree right now if you really believe that (which I'm sure you don't). Still you used to reference Kiffin's Head Coaching Record, but Cable was 11-35 at Idaho (not a powerful conference) and now 0-1 in the NFL. The team was ill-prepared, which you couldn't say too often with the previous coach.

You also make the statement: "The Defense is a good unit but they had no answer for Bush." The Defense is GOOD??? What games have you been watching? Our defense is good for a half, but once teams make adjustments, we have no answers. Once again, the game is played for 4 quarters!!! We gave up 34 points and it could have been worse. Oh yeah, Bush had only 27 yards on 13 carries and had 40 receiving yards. Yes, the 2 TD's were big, but I would hardly say his 67 Total yards was the reason we lost. Maybe try looking at Drew Brees and then ask yourself again why we lost. By the way, in 5 games we have given up an average of 27 points per game. If that's a Good Defense, what is Bad?

Also, you want to talk about about bad decisions, that call by Cable near the end of the half going for a field goal essentially handed New Orleans 3 points (lucky it wasn't 7) was Terrible Coaching!!! We have a pro-bowl punter, you punt the damn ball and hopefully pin them inside their own 10, or at worst they start at their own 20. It was a BAD DECISION, regardless of the name of the coach.

RaiderSensation, I do agree with you about the whole un-capped year, free-agents galore, able to drop players without taking a cap hit.... What scares me the most though: Al Davis is making ALL the calls. We don't have a GM or Long-Term coach in place now and that is absolutely terrifying. Believe it or not, the Raiders are one of the poorer revenue teams in the league (non-sellouts and blackouts=lack of local revenue, etc.) and if we are caught in a bidding war with the likes of Dallas, Washington, Miami/Tampa Bay (players love Florida), etc, we are in trouble if we are going to attract free agents. This whole future uncapped year may be a NIGHTMARE for us. Right now Al Davis gets players to come to Oakland because of the cap, as other desirable places cannot offer anywhere close to what we do. Anyway, the best way for us to become a winner again is to get a General Manager who is familiar with TODAY'S game, and build through the draft and Smart Free-Agent signings. Sadly, beginning 1-4, it's looking like it's another year of a top 5 pick and we need to bring in a Coach and GM to build on the young talent we do have (Russell, McFadden, Bush, Miller on O, and Nnamdi (if he gets paid), Morrison, and Howard on D).

Anyway, the season is still young, but teams that we thought were going to be gimmies are actually performing pretty well (Jets, Dolphins, Falcons).

Frustrating!!!

Os you really need to give the O-Line some more credit. They did a hell of a job all game except at the end when the Saints knew we were passing on every down. The defensive end has the advantage to know that he go sprint full speed around the Tackles and head straight for the QB. An you say Cable has change nothing. I am going to have to disagree with you. I think he is speeding up Russell's learning process. Hopefully he blossom into an efficient NFL quarterback before the season is over. If this happens then I could say that the Raiders had an excellent season.

"ToMMaaY, I'm afraid I can't explain any better... It is indeed confusing, but not as confusing as figuring out the QB rating, unless you're a rocket scientist. If you play Madden or know someone that plays Madden, lookup any player's contract. You'll see how the Signing Bonus is spread evenly over the term of the contract. That money is accelerated into the total remaining amount and counts against the cap, even if the player is no longer there. It is also known as "dead money".
The uncapped year will be the chance for all 32 teams to dump every bad contract they have."

Yeah I play Madden and understand the contracts somewhat. I guess the thing I need clarification on is how the Franchise gets punished for releasing or trading a player that's under contract. I just really don't know how to word it right either. But I understand what you're saying with the uncapped season thing. It's going to be like baseball right?
