Burress is tempting, but Raiders know better

Oakland Raiders
While the Oakland Raiders would welcome the addition of a game-breaking wideout like Plaxico Burress, Al Davis and company have learned from recent mistakes. After signing several players wrapped up with on- and off-field issues, the Raiders will likely stay clear of Burress’ troubled past. The New York Giants grew tired of the ongoing saga...

While I agree that Burress would be a risk, he might prove to be a valuable addition, to the team that signs him. If Al Davis is playing it safer these days, he wouldn't go after Burress until his legal case is decided. On TV, Burress's attorney said, they're not scheduled to return to court until June. So, nothing's likely to be resolved until then. The Raiders will have drafted before then, and may have selected a WR to compete for a starting job. If not, or if serious WR injuries occur, then Al might risk it. That would be in June, at the earliest. Burress is still one of the best receivers in the game. So, I'm sure he'll perform for his new team, if he's not in jail. I've been posting that the Raiders need to gather many more stars to return to greatness. Burress' career numbers and game footage confirm that he's one of the star WRs in the NFL. You know what he can do on the field. So, if his legal troubles are taken care of, then I'd take a chance on him. I think Tom Cable is a smart and decisive HC. If Burress were causing problems, or playing poorly, Coach Cable would have no problem cutting him. REmember DeAngelo Hall.? So Far, Al & Tom have made a good team, and are being careful to reconstruct our Raiders into a great team again. We'll see a much better team this season. Through all the recent losing, Al may be showing that he still knows what he's doing. I believe that having an owner with his knowledge of NFL football, has been, and always will be a Raider advantage. Yet, I think some of you readers in the Raider Nation, would call for Al to retire, even if the Raiders make the playoffs in '09. The Raiders have become a decent, young team, with a few stars, and several young potential stars. If we can add and develope 5-10 more stars, during the season, the playoffs are within our reach! We're on the way to doing that. Have Faith Raider Nation!

As I stated under the last article (Week Old, what's up with that?), it's being reported by several sources that Jeff Garcia is going to sign with the Raiders.

I personally would love the move. Jeff Garcia could come in and be JaMarcus' backup and mentor. The one big knock on JR, and you can infer as much from Cable's comments, is JR doesn't have a good work ethic. Having Garcia back him up and show him the ropes in practice, film-room, weight-room, and also being a sounding block, would be wonderful. Plus, God forbid, if anything happens to JaMarcus, or he isn't playing well, Jeff Garcia could be inserted and we wouldn't miss a beat.

As for Burress, if I thought he'd be able to play 16 games next season, I would say go for it. But the thing is, the guy will definitely receive some sort of punishment from the NFL (maybe even from the New York Justice System), that I don't think it would be worth it. I would much rather go after Torry Holt and draft a Wide Receiver in the second round (possibly first if we trade down for more picks).
