Oakland Raiders
After all the money Uncle Al have been giving to players before they played, he should take care of players that have contributed before. Burgess had 27 sacks in his first two seasons and if healthy, he can still produce better than the rest of DEs on the roster. He's sitting out at a salary that's at $2 million and indeed he should. And if he ...

Burgess has been well paid since choosing to sign with Oakland. The fact that the last year of his contract is team-friendly shows that the Raiders planned on paying him the full amount of his contract, as opposed to back-loading the contract and releasing Burgess before this year. If he doesn't want to play- forget him. If a team makes a good offer take it, if not let Burgess work on his post football work skills(want fries with that?).

First of all, HE IS UNDER CONTRACT!!! PLAY IT OUT!

If he feels his contract is unfair, he should not have signed it. He should be blaming his agent, not the Raiders.

As for an "incentive" based salary, that will never happen. Why? Because of the same agent that negotiated this wonderful contract to begin with, will not have his client sign a incentive based contract. What if his client gets hurt, benched or doesn't produce? His clients contract MUST be guaranteed.

Unfortunately for Burgess, his better days are behind him. The only way he can get a payday is to step up (like a MAN), produce some numbers (don't have to be pro bowl numbers, but better than the past couple seasons) and sign elsewhere next season. Crying about his current contract is not helping him cause. He is acting like a prima donna. Age and his numbers (I'm not talking about 4 years ago numbers, I'm talking the "what have you done for us lately numbers) are not on his side so acting in such a way is not helping his situation.

The only leverage he has to play is to show he can still perform at an above average level. Burgess needs to get his ass into camp so he can get into shape.

silverNblack, you cannot just look at the last year of a deal. The fact of the matter is, Derrick Burgess has ALREADY collected 15.5 Million Dollars over the last 4 years. The first 2 years, he deserved every single penny because of the 27 sacks you eluded to. However, you failed to mention that he's only had 11.5 sacks in the last two years, with last year only registering 3.5 sacks.

Why in the world should Al Davis, a man who gave Derrick Burgess a very, very generous contract, and at a time when nobody would touch Burgess, all of a sudden re-work the deal??? I think the last year 2 seasons are very evident that Burgess is not the player he once was. I think many teams feel that as well and won't offer much for him in a trade.

Burgess is really shooting himself in the foot here. The only way he is ever going to get another big payday is to suit up in the Silver & Black and prove to everyone that he still has gas left in the tank and have a 10+ Sack year.

Bottom line is, Burgess is under contract and because of the Moss deal, Al will not give up Burgess on the cheap. Al would rather have Burgess sit out the entire year (saving Davis Millions) than to give him away.
