Cable: Countdown to Unemployment

Oakland Raiders
Anyone who knows anything about the Oakland Raiders is well aware that Al Davis has a short fuse when it comes to losing. Add to that injury the insult of having three big name rookies drafted on the o-side of the ball the last three years, yet the team can’t rack up more than two hundred yards of offense in any given game and you know Al is...

It's only a matter of time.Philly, then the jets and then the bye week.Cable to resign or be sacked by then.

Qualified HC candidates have avoided the Raider job as if it were the plague. FA signings that are laughable. Draft selections that often make little or no sense. Management decisions that ignore glaring problems that exist on both the OL and DL. When the DL is finally addressed, Al gives up a number 1 for a 30 year old. Where do you think that 2011 pick is going to be given the glaring weaknesses present? That's an "all in" kind of move. That's a move you make when you believe you're only one player away. Did anyone honestly believe the Raiders were only one player away? How much longer can Oakland afford to ride the JR horse? Does anyone think the QB answer is on the roster? Less than 200 yards a game is untenable. A HC potentially getting arrested for punching out one of his assistants is just the cherry on the sundae. Six consecutive years where you go 4-12 is bad, however with the present liabilities, it's not a stretch to predict a few more 4-12 seasons. Is there anyone who still believes that Al isn't a "HUGE" part of the problems?

Al Davis WAS a genius, no question. But he's not any more. Now he is the demise of our team. No question.

I like Cable. But he’s clearly not NFL caliber. He’s probably not even college head coach material. He’s an offensive line coach. But because no one who is good enough (or even decent) will work for Al Davis, this is the mess we’re in. Pretty soon Al is going to have to take out want-ads for a coach and start hiring folks off the streets. We will never win until we can get quality coaches, and we will never get quality coaches while Al Davis runs the Raiders. That, my Raider brethren, is the undeniable truth.

You know, I often try to look for positives while I wallow in misery on Sundays. This Sunday, after looking like the worst team in the NFL by far, I thought of something. At least a really bad year would move Al a bit more towards selling/retiring. We’ve had 6 horrid seasons already and Al hasn’t budged, so I’m not saying he will after this year. But he sure as heck wouldn’t have if we had gone 8-8 this year. Although a 2-14 year might not ensure that he finally steps down, it would increase that chance.

We can be proactive. I’m not saying we should quit being Raider fans. Raider fans are for life, and even if we go 1-15 the next 10 seasons with Al at the helm, I will still be a Raider fan. But what about a boycott? Seriously, the only way to get Al’s attention is to hit him where it hurts—his pocket book. Quit going to games. Take a few years off until Al steps down. Don’t buy Raider gear during that time. At least then we can feel like we’re doing something to get our team back on the right track.
