Oakland Raiders
One month removed from cutting Darnell Bing, their fourth-round pick in the 2006 draft, the Oakland Raiders announced Saturday that they had released defensive end Quentin Moses, their third-round pick in '07. Moses was quickly claimed off waivers by the Arizona Cardinals, bringing an official end to his brief career with the silver and black....

These roster cuts don't make much sense. They all smell like Al Davis making personnel moves based on his gut again. Darnell Bing is a really talented guy. So was Doug Gabriel.

They seem to be convinced that they can ignore the future on defense right now because its good enough. But giving up a Quentin Moses now is going come back to hurt them in a couple years.

The only good move the Raiders made was for Daunte Culpepper. The Dolphins are the dumbest team in football. They released an all-pro QB for nothing and did a trade for Trent Green.

I for one was furious immediately after the draft, specifically because we did not appear to draft for our most glaring needs. To me Moses was an obvious bad choice even before I saw his bio. He is another damned tweener that Al seems infatuated with. I'm also extremely concerned about how we've managed the salary cap. Having said that, I would say, though, that grading out this year's draft is still way too premature. Our needs going into the draft were: QB, OT, C, DT, TE and Safety. After 12 picks we ended up w/ 1 tackle, 1 qb, 1 dt/de, 1 te, 1 wr, 1 fb and 1 rb. Whether a player contributes this year is really a secondary issue. What matters is if they remain a value to the team over the long haul. Of course, we can't evaluate at this point most of the picks. There is reason to be very hopeful about Miller and Richardson though and possibly Henderson. Sadly, getting two or more decent players out of a draft may not be all that bad. In all, we added 21 new players to this team this year. By my reconning, we have 17 good players(i.e. nambi, Burgess...), 17 pretty good players(Simms, Porter, Routt...), and a handful with potential. That leaves somewhere around 12 players that we could easily upgrade upon. Considering that we had to start building a roster from scratch after the superbowl, I'd say we're not doing too bad. If we can hold this team together, manage the cap, get a few more players in here and let Kiffin's system gel, we should be fine. Slow and steady wins the race.

Doug Gabriel can't have been that good, Art Shell, Belichick and Kiffn, all three gave up on him...Makes you think...
Michael Ash, overall I agree, but given the pick Jay Richardson, the loss of Moses isn't that big, If Moses had been the only DE taken in this years draft the release had hurt so much more...
