Pittsburgh Steelers
Upon first glance at this year’s schedule, it seems the Pittsburgh Steelers will have quite an uphill battle when it comes to keeping the AFC North crown. But don’t fret, Steelers fans; here’s why the predicted strength of schedule joins trigonometry and calculus as the type of number crunching that doesn’t apply to normal life. The...

The tougher schedule better prepares a team for a championship run. Sure they will end up 11-5 instead of 14-2, but if they are actually good then they will win the games they are supposed to and make adjustments in the games they don't so they can become a better team over the course of the season. Something the Patriots didn't do last year, and got burned by not knowing how to adjust for a heavy pass rush in the Super Bowl

I was waiting for a good article about this. Pre season strength of schedule is one of the most overrated things in football. As shown in the article it doesn't really matter, nice article.

I think something that Ive found interesting is how each of the past three Super Bowl winners were all Wild-Card teams that had to win 3 playoff games just to go to the Super Bowl, including the last 2 on the road. Maybe Cunninghams point about having the extra game to make adjustments holds true here. Also, it keeps the team from becoming rusty due to long layoffs and resting starters, something that always seems to bite the Colts whenever they have the bye week. I'd like to look up the strength of schedule for the last three SB winners and see if they had tougher overall schedules than the teams who got the byes ahead of them.
