Conventional thought penciled in a redshirt year for Garrett Gilbert in 2009. But recent developments indicate the highly touted quarterback could back up Colt McCoy next season. The Gatorade National Football Player of the Year signed with Longhorns last month after throwing for 12,537 yards during his high school career at Lake Travis (Texas)....

IMO, Mack Brown made the move simply because Chiles has too much athletic ability to serve as the backup quarterback. I didn't mention in the column that Jordan Shipley would miss spring training due to injury, and Quan Cosby completed his eligibility.

Placing Chiles at receiver gives McCoy one more target and option for practice. I think Greg Davis and Brown want their starting quarterback to be as comfortable with as many receivers as possible in case Shipley goes down.
