USC Trojans
Some believe that elevating a college football program from the doldrums to mediocrity is far easier than taking a middling one to a championship. The coaches who have guided poor programs to respected, average ones deserve great respect. Wake Forest’s Jim Grobe, Rutgers’ Greg Schiano and Missouri's Gary Pinkel are among a few who have ...

Very interesting article. What other programs do you feel have hit the wall of mediocrity? How about USC's cross town rivals, the Golden Bears of UCLA.

Also Ran:

Penn State- Yes, they beat Florida State in the Orange Bowl some years back with Michael Robinson at the helm, but what, other than that, have the Nittany Lions done thats merited conversation or consideration in years?

DevilDawg61, thanks for commenting. Not only UCLA but I'd also throw in there Arizona State. They've been piddling around since 1996 up until last season. That said, Erickson appears to have ASU heading toward a Pac-10 title at some point; it's just a matter of beating USC. Oregon and Cal have floated about in the middle part of the conference more often than not as well.

Outside of the Pac, you picked a good one in Penn State. In keeping with the historical perspective: others that pop in my mind are Tennessee, Arkansas (yes, they played in the SEC title game in recent years but before that...), Wisconsin (that appears to be changing), Clemson, Georgia Tech, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M;.
