Schemes could hurt Vikings

Minnesota Vikings
If you follow the Minnesota Vikings, "zone" has become a dirty word. In 2005, under former head coach Mike Tice, left tackle Bryant McKinnie was on the verge of turning into one of the NFL's top left tackles. Meanwhile, Steve Hutchinson was the best left guard in football with the Seattle Seahawks. Fast forward to 2008 -- McKinnie has regressed...

The bottom line is Childress will be gone if they don't at least make the playoffs this year. The expectations are too high to underachieve again.

I agree bardley80. Unreal or not, expectations are expectations.

I agree that on the D-Side of the ball, the zone scheme has been picked abart for the better part of 2 seasons. Not entirely sure what the real deal is, but it's just not that functional, and blaming it all on the front four doesn't seem that great of an excuse.

But the O-Line has actually done just fine...I believe it to be more an isuse of talent on the right side then the scheme. Birk and Hutchinson are pro-bowlers, and McKinney has been "Almost Great" his whole career. Was it the Vikings that lead the league in rushing last season?

Water could hurt the Vikings. They might be drowned if they fell off a boat, and in Minnesota, the water freezes during football season, and ice often causes car wrecks. So, water should be totally banned in Minnesota. (You're not buying this, are you? I hope not.) Zone blocking does not require mastery of quantum mechanics. Besides, Birk went to Harvard, and the guys backing him up at center went to Stanford and Notre Dame. You block one guy and keep your eye on a linebacker to make sure that guy isn't coming. You don't need a cryptic slide rule to work this stuff out. If you want to change anyone's defense, there are things you can do on offense, but no one has told my yet what they're going to do to get Jared Allen off the field this year. Childress will be around for years, even if there are so many morons in the state that he winds up coaching the California Vikings.
