Buffalo Bills Football News

Pats’ dominance over Bills has little to do with cameras

Thursday, May 08, 2008 | Posted by Connor Byrne

Earlier this week, former New England assistant Matt Walsh turned over the evidence of the Patriots' videotaping escapades from 2000-2002 to the National Football League, and one of the eight tapes Walsh gave commissioner Roger Goodell pertained to the Buffalo Bills. In specific, it was footage of New England taping Buffalo's coaches' signals in November of 2001. The Patriots won 21-11 that day and then took the second matchup of the season in closer fashion, 12-9. Naturally, Bills fans -- many of whom have been calling for the Patriots to forfeit their AFC East titles and Super Bowl victories -- would like to see the Pats receive a greater punishment than the initial one handed down last September (a $500,000 fine and surrender of a first-round pick).

However, Bills loyalists shouldn't be too concerned over any videotaping the Patriots have done during their seven years of dominance over the AFC. New England has compiled an incredible 13-1 record against the Bills since the first year the Pats began videotaping, '01, and it probably has very little to do with anything but a superior roster and much better coaching staff. During the teams' last 14 matchups, the Pats have outscored the Bills by a 386-158 margin. That's a difference of 228 points, which is an roughly 16 per game. Videotaping makes for that much of a gap between two division rivals? Not likely.

When the Bills faced the Patriots in a prime-time home game last November, the latter ran roughshod in a 56-10 rout. That was two months after New England was punished by the NFL for videotaping its Week 1 contest against the New York Jets. In addition, it was the Bills' third coaching staff since the Pats videotaped their signals in 2001. Since then, the Bills have run through the eras of Gregg Williams, Mike Mularkey and Dick Jauron. The Patriots have thrashed the Bills not because of some meaningless videotaping, then, but because of the presence of surefire future Hall of Famers like Tom Brady (quarterback) and Bill Belichick (head coach). The Bills simply haven't had good enough players or coaches to combat New England's, which is the reason the teams' games haven't been anywhere close to competitive in the last seven years.

If the Bills are unhappy about the videotaping evidence from 2001 -- and they have the right to be, as it did violate the integrity of the league -- the best revenge they can get on the Patriots is to actually beat the three-time Super Bowl winners for a change. That's clearly easier said than done, of course, but it's high time Buffalo began putting up some sort of fight against New England. Thanks to the improvements they've made over the past few offseasons -- particularly this one -- the Bills might finally be on their way to at least remaining in the Pats' stratosphere when the two franchises square off this season and beyond. To curb Brady's stellar play against the Bills, they wisely bulked up their defense by adding size and physicality, acquiring accomplished veterans Marcus Stroud (defensive tackle) and Kawika Mitchell (linebacker) as well as first-round pick Leodis McKelvin (cornerback). Additionally, the Bills seem to have an up-and-coming, fast offense that might give New England's aging, lumbering defense some difficulty.

Whether the Bills are actually any closer to the Patriots' level will play itself out beginning in the fall, but the fact New England videotaped a solitary game between the two teams almost eight years ago shouldn't have any bearing on the past seven seasons. Spygate isn't a valid excuse for having your team get outscored by 228 points by another club over a 14-game period, and Bills fans would be wise to accept that.

The Pats have beat the Bills 13 out of the last 14 games--it wasn't due to the secretive filming. I hope everyone isn't so naive to think that this is an isolated case. This has been going on for years--why do you think coaches are so paranoid about who is watching the practices and walk thru's. It is legendary the extreme the things NFL coaches have gone thru to protect their game plans.

I by know means am sticking up for the Pats. The NFL now is aware of the problem and will come after teams hard. Teams can no longer fly under the radar, but I suspect that certain teams will become more creative (especially with technology today) to try and get that edge.

The Pats have beat the the Bills because; they have had better talent---better coaching and above all a better front office.

Nate, you're right - this looks like the best Bills team we've had in a long while. The best part is that it is a very young team so the future is bright!

On another un-related note.. I want to initiate a discussion regarding the Toronto Series. Last week there was some discussion regarding loosing the team to Toronto. Well yesterday they announced the pricing and I was totally flabbergasted!!! I expected high pricing but they are absolutely out of their minds!! The good news in all of this is that they clearly have decided to favor businesses instead of individuals, which to me is a great sign to keep the Bills in Buffalo. There are absolutely no potential Torontonian Bills fan that can afford those crazy prices! And I seriously doubt that they can fill the stadium with corporate seats, so I suspect that their greed will come back to bite them in the as#!
I am part of the 3000 Bills season ticket holders that signed up for the Toronto series and I am strongly considering all the options because this is crazy. I still will probably end-up buying two tickets just to edge my bets but trust me I certainly cannot afford and nor do I wish to go see a game that will end up costing me close to $1000 per game so instead I will secure my seats and just scalp them on eBay. So I ask you this, I am a true Bills fan and I won't be going to the games - doesn't that tell you something? This greedy approach of theirs will only help solidify the fact that Buffalo is a great deal. I believe the ticket prices in Buffalo should & need to go up over the next couple of years in order to make it more appealing to local buyers and this Toronto series will help in the process.

Keysh, is the integrity of the game really the most important part of the game? I'm not one of those conspiracy nuts but think about this. Think about all the questionable calls you've seen in NFL games over the years usually favoring one of the league's high profile teams. Then think about the fact that in the history of the NFL despite all the millions or billions of dollars that are wagered each weekend on NFL games, not once has an NFL official, player or coach been caught for throwing a call, a play or a game. A few players have been suspended for gambling decades ago but no one connected with Pro Football has never been connected with helping to influence the outcome of a game for gambling purposes. Now with all of that money being gambled on games, most of it being handled by organized crime, is it really possible that not a player, coach or official has never been bought? There are so many calls left to the descreation of the officals now like offensive holding, blocking on kick returns. How hard would it be for a bought official to throw a flag or ignore throwing one to effect the outcome of a game?

I can still feel that people are upset with the Pats winning ways?
They steal signs in baseball all the time. If we want to win, we must change that not hope that the Pats do. It always starts with yourselves!

Keysh67 hit it on the nose, INTEGRITY OF THE GAME...Belicheat should be banned from the league.
He knows the rules and decided to break them, DECIDED TO BREAK THEM!! a lousy 500k does nothing to him or kraft.
I am a die-hard bills fan and naturally hate the Pats but I'm also a die-hard NFL fan and the Patsies put a cloud over the game I love. f them!!

Someone please show Jauron how a videocam works. Imagine how amazed Belichick was when he found out that the Bills don't have any signals!

Keysh, I get that you are a Canadian so I don't have a real problem with you buying tickets to the Toronto game. That said I don't know why any Upstate NYer (Buffalo, Rochester,Syracuse) would even consider buying tickets to this game? I heard Scott Bechtold of the Bills say he hoped Bill's season ticket buyers would buy tickets. Yeah right! I'm going to pay 3x to 4x what it would cost to watch the same game at The Ralph and drive an additional couple of hours both ways to see a game I should be seeing by sitting in my usual seats. As one of those paranoid dillusionals that thinks this one game per season venture to Toronto is just the tip of the iceberg, I think any Bills season ticket holder who would buy tickets to the Toronto games is just helping to push the Bills north.

Good morning all and let the whining begin !
8&8;-4ever,
The whining bitterness coming from YOU, Mr. Mediocrity, is what gets me. If you're gonna speak in cliches then try this one, if you forget the mistakes from the past; you're chances of making them again are great.
A majority of us, here, have had a past. We include it in our present and it shows up in our future. That's the whole idea of being a fan. You say, "it's our team." But, it's our team only as far back as you remember !?!
RockesterinDC,
Everybody cheats ! Especially, if it's there for the taking. Sometimes it's understood. Even you cheat. Otherwise you'd sign in here using your real name !?!
Nate, again you slipped in that quick laugh; thanx. If I could get away with it; I'd try another 'kidney joke' again.
I'm glad there won't be anymore to this
'spygate'. I don't think Goodell and the League want to start listing the other teams that have taped practices. 'Cause then how do you penalize a team that taped and still lost !?!
