Butler, a cornerback who would also like to try offense, snagged a 27-yard touchdown pass from Zach Frazer to give the White team a 21-20 victory over the Blue in UConn's annual spring game, played in the sunshine before a crowd of 9,700.
"We're definitely going to play him on offense," Edsall said of Butler. "He won't have to bus us."
A 5-foot-11, 181-pound redshirt senior, Butler also made three tackles.
"Nobody got hurt, so that is first and foremost," Edsall said afterward. "All in all, I was very pleased with the spring. I think we accomplished a lot."
First-string quarterback Tyler Lorenson sat out the game with a hamstring pull, giving Frazer and redshirt freshman Cody Endres the reps. Frazer was 16 of 27 for 272 yards and a touchdown (two interceptions), Endres 14 of 26 for 94 yards and a single pick (in the end zone, by Robert McClain, with two minutes left).
Starting running backs Andre Dixon and Donald Brown each scored a touchdown, but what really pleased Edsall was the play of young backups Robbie Frey (92 rushing yards) and Meme Wylie (92).
The defense was led by a non-starter, 6-5, 250-pound redshirt freshman defensive end Kendall Reyes, who had three sacks for the Blue. Safety Robert Vaughan and LB Scott Lutrus, both playing for the White, notched nine tackles apiece.
