Top safety Loston commits to Clemson

Thursday, May 01, 2008 | Posted by Marc Hudgens

Safety Craig Loston, a highly anticipated recruit from Aldine, Texas, announced his verbal commitment to the Clemson Tigers.

The Eisenhower High School player was heavily sought out by numerous big colleges, including Florida, Georgia, Notre Dame, Oklahoma and USC. Until this past Wednesday, Loston was torn between Clemson and LSU before giving his verbal to tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator Billy Napier.

This class of 2009 prospect is rated by Rivals as a five-star player and the No. 1 safety in the nation.

COMMENTARY: Each of Clemson's recruiting classes continue to outdo the previous, as Tommy Bowden and company are enjoying their catch for the 2009 recruiting season -- which already includes a quartet of four-star players in addition to Loston's five-star status. It's also a testament to Clemson's recruiting prowess to beat out the traditional powers for the country's top high school players. Granted, this isn't a lock, as it's truly not official until the players sign their letters of intent during next year's signing day. But this is a huge boon to Clemson and Bowden, and his staff should be proud of its accomplishments on the recruiting trail.

He could start as a true freshman. I just hope he stays with Clemson. As AJ Harmon showed Clemson, it's a long time until signing day.

From what I understand, Loston will graduate from High School in December and enroll in college early, much like Da'Quan Bowers at Clemson this past January. If that is the case, I exxpect him to be a Clemson Tiger come January 2009.

Great. I also just read in Scout.com that he plans to enroll in Clemson in January. Unfortunately, he also plans to take some more visits at other schools.
