Just weeks after winning a Super Bowl with the Giants, safety Gibril Wilson signed with Oakland for $39 million over six years. Wilson will return to the Bay Area, not far from where he played high school ball (Oak Grove in San Jose).
Wilson had 70 solo tackles and a career-high four interceptions in 13 games for New York last season. He will help one of the league's weakest secondaries, a unit that went through two free safeties in 2007.
Commentary: Why does Oakland always sign players after they've already peaked? That's not to argue that Wilson, 26, does not have several more years of good play in him. But the Raiders signed Larry Brown and Desmond Howard after they won Super Bowl MVPs. They weren't good investments.
Fantasy Football Impact: Oakland might be able to stop a few more long passes and long runs. Wilson is a great open-field tackler. But the signing doesn't vault them into feared-defense status.
