Rhodes is gone … how about Jordan now?

Thursday, May 01, 2008 | Posted by Anthony Carroll

On Monday, the Oakland Raiders sent Super Bowl XLI star Dominic Rhodes to the unemployment line. The move is an after-effect of a draft weekend that not only put the Raiders over the salary cap, but added another ball carrier to an already long list of more-than-capable halfbacks.

Oakland traded former first-round CB Fabian Washington to Baltimore on Day 2 of the draft, bearing a fourth round pick -- and a $1,093,750 cap hit -- in exchange. The swap ever so slightly put the Raiders over the salary cap.

Rhodes, however, was primed to earn $1.75 million in 2008. So, team owner Al Davis cut him. Problem solved. Oakland’s now under the cap.

With the Raiders having no apparent hesitation in cutting Rhodes, the next question becomes: What’s so hard about letting LaMont Jordan go?

The 29-year-old running back, who joined the Raiders in the offseason of 2005, is primed to rake in $4.7 million in 2008, or $2.95 million more than Rhodes would have made. If Jordan miraculously makes it past next season, he’ll earn $5 million in 2009.

Last season, Rhodes and Jordan played essentially reverse roles at opposite times in the season. Jordan acted as the warm-up guy to leading rusher Justin Fargas, carrying the ball 125 times in the first eight weeks of the season for 511 yards. For the rest of the season, the 230-pounder rushed only 19 more times for 38 yards. Rhodes was the closer, gaining 278 in the last three weeks of the season after rushing for just 24 yards in the 14 weeks prior.

The dilemma is where Jordan would actually bring value to the Raiders’ offense.

With Fargas recently being re-signed to a three-year, $12 million deal, second-year halfback Michael Bush reportedly fully recovered from injury and rookie Darren McFadden now in the fold, there isn’t much room for Jordan in the backfield.

Even as a pass catcher, the arrival of former Atlanta Falcons fullback Justin Griffith last offseason has lessened Jordan’s value. The 27-year-old FB caught 26 passes last season, upping his career total to 113 receptions. Jordan had just two more grabs last season than Griffith and had only 10 catches two years ago.

Rhodes, who closed out the ’07 campaign with two 100-plus-yard efforts, appeared to make enough late-season buzz to earn himself a spot on the roster this season. At the very least, you’d expect him to be cut after Jordan. However, Rhodes clarified Tuesday that he was aware he’d be let loose if McFadden was drafted.

“If they drafted Darren McFadden, I was like, ‘I’ll restructure but it’s got to be to where if y’all draft him I can leave, you know. Y’all let me go.’ That’s kind of how it went. They kept their word and they let me get a chance to go somewhere else and get my opportunity,” Rhodes said during an interview with Sirius Satellite Radio.

Wednesday, the San Francisco Chronicle indicated one reason why Jordan also hasn’t been shown the door alongside Rhodes.

“The Raiders are holding onto Jordan, a league source said, because some in the organization believe they can still get trade value for the man who ran for 1,025 yards in 2005,” Chronicle staff writer David White wrote.

It’s very unlikely, however, for a team to trade for a man who has had back-to-back seasons with fewer than 600 yards and four touchdowns.

So just cut him and get it over with, before he starts getting advice from ex-way-too-long-of-a-Raider Tyler Brayton.

Jordan should get tossed like a sack of potatoes. Especially after Warren Sappp said that he was always out of shape before camp started. If McFadden can split the carries with Fargas this year he'll rack up close to a thousand yards. I can't wait to hear about all the rookies on May 9th. McFadden wearing #20????

Darren McFadden will be #20. That's his number in official team page.

The only reason Jordan is still in the roster is because they think he could have some trade value. He will be gone July 1.

I see Fargas as the starter, McFadden will be on the field very often too, carrying the ball and in 3 downs. Michael Bush will have to compete for playing time, if he is not healthy or fast to compete, don't rule out see Louis Rankin making the roster, since he is fast and can also be a KR.

LaMont Jordan most likely will not be gone until the Raiders are positive that Michael Bush is 100% healed and is the back we thought he was when we drafted him... Rookies and players who have no accrued NFL time (I believe Bush qualifies), will get to show what they got in a Mini-Camp on May 9-11. If all goes well with Bush, Jordan will be cut in June, as I see no team willing to trade anything for him. On the other hand, if Bush doesn't look good, I imagine the Raiders will just Restructure instead of cutting.

Well Warren Sapp and Dominic Rhodes sure had a lot to say the last couple of days. AC touched a bit on Rhodes, but left out a lot cheap shots at the organization. Here's some of the big quotes:

"Everybody had their own little party going, you know what I'm saying?" Rhodes said. "It wasn't like a big party for everybody. Everybody wanted to do this or that, you know what I'm saying? It was never anybody saying, 'Ok, we're all going to do this together.' It was a whole bunch of just fires everywhere and then, as you see, this off-season kind of blazed out of control. I don't really think that Lane Kiffin wanted to take a running back in the first round, let's just put it like that. He has to deal with it now but I don't think that's what he wanted to do."

Asked if Kiffin had a chance to succeed in Oakland, Rhodes said, "I don't know, man. It's going to be hard. He's put in all these different bad situations to where he doesn't have a chance, you know? When you know you need to stop the run and you don't get anybody to stop the run.... He just doesn't really have a chance, because somebody else is in control all the time."

“The year out in Oakland was a tough one for me, man, especially coming from the Colts which is a great organization. They put together their team in a way with not a bunch of guys that are supposed to be like Hollywood types,” Rhodes said. “They go and get guys like myself who they know can play football and they put them on the field and they win with them, you know?"

Anyway, frustrating to read stuff like this... I just hope Kiffin is left alone to coach this team.

That's the first time I've read what Rhodes said....thank you RaiderCraig.Let's face it-he wouldn't blame himself would he ?He wouldn't say he was at fault for missing the first 4 games or that he should replace a back who ran for 179 yds (right ? )against Miami. The Colts are a great organisation-when why'd you leave ? The money ? Takes the money and then slags off the team. What a class act.See you in Denver,it's where you belong.

Jordan ? I've a confession to make.Over here in England we've got a glamour/page 3 model by the same name (real name Katie Price -check her out ).That's who I see whenever someone talks about Jordan.......

RaiderCraig, I want to say that was mainly conjecture on Rhodes' part. He also felt that he was being punished for the 4-game suspension even though the Raiders knew that before they signed him.
I don't believe Al made the decision to bench Rhodes, it was Kiffin. For some reason or another, Kiffin did not like Rhodes. If it was Al's decision to bench Rhodes, then it was his decision to keep JaMarcus on the sidelines in favor of Josh McCown for most of the season, which I find very hard to believe.
IMHO, Kiffin was acting like a spoiled brat last season and he played his favorites.
Hopefully, Al's backhand helped Kiffin to mature a bit.

I personally can't wait for the season to get here. But it will very pleasing to see One-Stop & Drop Jordan get cut.

****FIRST OFF-- REAL365FOOTBALL RESTRICTS ME FROM PICTURES OR AVATARS...JUST FOR THE RECORD****

Now then...Great article! We need good quotes like these.

Shouldn't be Al's decision to bench anybody. Al Davis needs to manage this team and quit coaching them...He's got way to many irons in the fire---Al going over every piece of the game film after a game. He states that; "do you know how long it takes to go over the film?"

It's NOT the owners job to go over the film. Al Davis needs to fix his front office mess and leave the fundamentals on the field to the coaching staff/personal.

We should rock this year.... anything under 9-7 is going to bne a disappointment in my book. Tons of free agents, high quality ones, easiest schedule I can remember... no snow games other than possible Nov 23rd in Denver (believe it's the 23rd)...There's a bit of air time on the plane... but overall our schedule is awesome! Got the best QB, the best RB in the draft, our fourth rounder should put that damn Higgins on the bench from returns. Everything looks good and this week Kiffin put back on a Raiders shirt and looks more relaxed. I still think Rob Ryan is a complete bonehead... but Al loves him...so 9 out of 10 isn't bad!

GOOOOOOOOOOOOO RAIDERS!

I must agree with most of you today, as for Jordan his release on June 1st is almost certain. The cap hit will be to the RAIDERS liking and as long as Bush is healthy Jordan will be gone. Don't believe what you may hear about Al Davis trying to trade Jordan unless it's a huge offer which wont happen, June 1st is the date. It's great to hear Knapp talking up Russell and Russell spending all his time at the Facility gearing up for the 2008 season. The one thing this Team needs to make a Playoff run is consistent play from the QB position.

Hey Raidersensation Kiffin did need that backhand. I think he's a good coach, but you said it right, he was being a little bitch. He should've got Jamarcus more PT when the playoffs were outta reach, He should've seen what Bush had and played Rhodes more. Anyway I think that backhand helped.

Raider Sensation and LocoLizzard, I totally agree that Lane Kiffin needed to play JaMarcus earlier... But Al Davis also needed a friggin' backhand to the noggin for not signing JaMarcus Russell until after the season. That put a damper on everything and stunted JaMarcus' progress. That's not on Lane... So it cuts both ways!!! Hopefully Al learned a lesson and we get McFadden in camp on day 1.

Also, Michael Bush needed to be taken off the PUP list last season, and you cannot with a straight face say that was on Lane Kiffin. That's another huge mistake by Al Davis last season. He was worried that LaMont would have gone to Denver, but when we were as bad as we were, who cares if LaMont went there. Seeing and developing Michael Bush would have been worth it. Now we are speculating, without having any clue as to whether this guy is healthy and the real deal.
