Raiders by the numbers: Wistful offseason version

Wednesday, May 07, 2008 | Posted by Os Davis

What’s a stat monkey to do during the offseason with no runners running, no passers passing and the football universe so disturbingly empty? Look harder! Today, a few numbers for Oakland Raiders backers to keep at their fingertips for those prolonged speculative office discussions on the fate of the silver and black in 2008 …

Zero. Truth to the rumor that Al Davis and company are bringing in St. Louis Rams football operations director Samir Suleiman as a “capologist,” despite reports from “a source within the Rams organization.” For some reason, this story captivated the imagination early this week, but team exec John Herrera quickly quashed the rumors with “I spoke with Al Davis and he's never heard of him … We've got a guy [Tom Delaney] who's doing a good job in that area. As far as a 'capologist,' we've got one and we don't know this guy."

All right, then.

11. As in May 9: The Raiders open rookie minicamp! The Raiders open rookie minicamp!

15. As in Aug. 15, the new date of the preseason game against the Tennessee Titans; earlier in the week, the NFL moved the game from a Thursday night to a Friday night for television purposes.

20. The number Darren McFadden’ll be sporting for the Raiders this season. A great if slightly obscure number, Oakland Raiders Inc. apparently hopes McFadden will follow in the legendary footsteps of the likes of Barry Sanders.

30. The age of Edgerton Hartwell, the linebacker once reckoned to be the salvation of the Baltimore Ravens, now aboard the Raiders ship. No salary numbers vis-à-vis Hartwell’s contract have been released, but surely even freewheeling Al Davis isn’t paying anything near the six-year, $26 million contract Hartwell’s agent connived out of the Atlanta Falcons back in 2005.

47. The number of points Austria’s Swarco Raiders hung up on the Carinthian Black Lions in a five-TD margin of victory in Week 3 of the Austrian Football League. Pretty impressive when considering that the American version of the silver and black hasn’t scored 40 in a game since 2004 and hasn’t topped it since 2002.

XLIII. The goal, the elusive goal ...

130.4 and 164.4. Those are the 2007 Oakland Raiders’ running yards and passing yards per game, respectively. Because we have time before the preseason proper, tell me again what was up with the McFadden selection?

10,580,894. Approximate number of seconds (as of this writing) until the Raiders and Broncos kick it off in Oakland on Sept. 8. We’re ready for some football!

All I want for Christmas is the 32nd pick in next year’s draft! Al Davis is the MAN! This years draft and free agents are the work of THE MASTER! Anyone who can’t see the freight train coming down the tracks is stuck like a deer in the headlights. It only took two years but Davis had a plan and now he’s about to take the rest of the NFL back to school. Davis is going to force teams to play to our strengths. For instance, who has the best running attack in the NFL? The Raiders, that’s who. Who hits the hole fastest in the NFL? Fargus that’s who. Who ran a 4.27 40? McFadden, that’s who, let’s not even get started about Bush, who is a secret weapon all by himself. The line, don’t worry about the line. Kiffin had these guys blocking at the number 6 level in the league with Rhodes and Jordan running as part time backs. Rhodes and Jordan better than ok backs, they are good backs. But without either of them staying healthy, Fargus got burned off quickly, because the other teams knew we only had one option. Without the other teams being able to keep pace with us on the ground, they will be forced to pass. Oh yea, who has the best pass defense in the land? We do! One time Hall actually was clocked running a 4.17 40. In case anyone doesn’t know how fast that is, over the years, they have handed out lots and lots of little pieces of gold tied to ribbons for running slower than that. Ok so a more football related example would be, Deion Sanders would look slow in the same backfield as this guy. Oh, did I forget to mention the guy on the other side. Asomugha is just a top ten shut down guy. The defense is coming along great this year with more strengths, everyone else, is hoping don’t work out. The talking heads have actually run out of reasons to complain and are reduced to commenting, “How come they picked a running back number four, they looked good there?” Bo Jackson came one time in all of NFL history. Remember, he made all the other teams look like high school players trying to catch the Pro guy! He was head and shoulders above the rest. If McFadden has any moves to go along with that 4.27 speed…Fargus and Bush are also going to have very good years. Oh yea, did I forget to mention the new number one pick in the nation at Quarterback we selected last year? The one who has all the skills and now the tools. I bet he can’t wait for the first time the other team blitzes, or the first time they bring 8 to stop the run. Did I mention our new All-Pro receiver and his new 4.3 buddies? This is truly a work of THE MASTER. Al Davis is the MAN! All I want for Christmas is the 32nd Pick in next year’s draft!

tell me again what was up with the McFadden signing?

i'll tell you why, because fargas is injury prone, bush has yet to play a down, rhodes is gone, and jordan sucks! thats why we drafted mcfadden. If If If and if edwards gets his act together, hartwell bounces back deangelo hall stays happy and aso gets his money how can anyone not believe we will be back on top.
as far as #20 lets hope mcfadden puts up the monster numbers davis did running behind the donks zone blocking scheme, and lets hope he has the moves barry sanders showed but actually sticks around a little longer than he did.

Terrell Davis wore numer# 30, but who cares. Good Morning Nation. What a fine overcast west coast morning. It smells like football.

I like number 20. And Oldman Raider is right, Davis wore #30.

Raiders rookie mini-camp starts day 9, not 11.

While I like your enthusiasm svduran1, but let's not get too carried away. I guess I'm going to be the realist now.

One, we aren't the best rushing team in football. That would go hands down to the Vikings with Adrian Peterson (1,341 yards and 12 TD's) and Chester Taylor (844 yards and 6 TD's). On another note, Chester Taylor ran for 1,216 yards in '06, when AP wasn't on the roster.

Two, I loved Bo Jackson, but the truth of the matter is, we never won jack with him in there. In the 4 years and only 38 games on the roster, we had only one winning season. In '87 we were 5-10, '88 we were 7-9, '89 we were 8-8, and in '90 we were a great 12-4, but his Hip went POP and never saw him again!!! So I DON'T WANT McFadden to be Bo Jackson. I want him to be Darren McFadden an all-around Bad A$$ who does everything (run, catch, throw) and plays a long, long time.

Four, yes Fargas hits the hole fast, but he also runs right into people and inevitably hurts his body. That's why I love McFadden, he'll make people miss and then take it to the house.

Four, if I have to hear only about .40 times, I'm going to puke!!! I mean I would love to have Football Players who are fast, but "FOOTBALL PLAYER" needs to be first and foremost over Speed. No need to look further than the likes of James Jett, Alvis Whitted and now Fabian Washington. Give me a Football Player who is fast, rather than world class speed, but can't play the game.

Anyway, I hear you asking Santa Clause for the 32nd pick, meaning we won the Superbowl, but after winning only 19 games in 5 years, I'll take a winning season at 9-7 and a Wild Card as well.

Game planning for our offense could be difficult as long as everyone is on the same page. Mike Bush is the X-factor. If he can give us 10-15 "bruising" carries per game, with Fargas and McFab pressing the edges, we have the potential to average 120-150 rushing ypg. My kid has already created his roster on XB360 Madden and started a season. It could be that simple, but the NFL is the most competitive professional league in sports. IMHO
