Raiders by the numbers: Wistful offseason version

Tuesday, May 06, 2008 | Posted by Os Davis

What’s a stat monkey to do during the offseason with no runners running, no passers passing and the football universe so disturbingly empty? Look harder! Today, a few numbers for Oakland Raiders backers to keep at their fingertips for those prolonged speculative office discussions on the fate of the silver and black in 2008 …

Zero. Truth to the rumor that Al Davis and company are bringing in St. Louis Rams football operations director Samir Suleiman as a “capologist,” despite reports from “a source within the Rams organization.” For some reason, this story captivated the imagination early this week, but team exec John Herrera quickly quashed the rumors with “I spoke with Al Davis and he's never heard of him … We've got a guy [Tom Delaney] who's doing a good job in that area. As far as a 'capologist,' we've got one and we don't know this guy."

All right, then.

11. As in May 9: The Raiders open rookie minicamp! The Raiders open rookie minicamp!

15. As in Aug. 15, the new date of the preseason game against the Tennessee Titans; earlier in the week, the NFL moved the game from a Thursday night to a Friday night for television purposes.

20. The number Darren McFadden’ll be sporting for the Raiders this season. A great if slightly obscure number, Oakland Raiders Inc. apparently hopes McFadden will follow in the legendary footsteps of the likes of Barry Sanders.

30. The age of Edgerton Hartwell, the linebacker once reckoned to be the salvation of the Baltimore Ravens, now aboard the Raiders ship. No salary numbers vis-à-vis Hartwell’s contract have been released, but surely even freewheeling Al Davis isn’t paying anything near the six-year, $26 million contract Hartwell’s agent connived out of the Atlanta Falcons back in 2005.

47. The number of points Austria’s Swarco Raiders hung up on the Carinthian Black Lions in a five-TD margin of victory in Week 3 of the Austrian Football League. Pretty impressive when considering that the American version of the silver and black hasn’t scored 40 in a game since 2004 and hasn’t topped it since 2002.

XLIII. The goal, the elusive goal ...

130.4 and 164.4. Those are the 2007 Oakland Raiders’ running yards and passing yards per game, respectively. Because we have time before the preseason proper, tell me again what was up with the McFadden selection?

10,580,894. Approximate number of seconds (as of this writing) until the Raiders and Broncos kick it off in Oakland on Sept. 8. We’re ready for some football!

The Pat's were only punnished for this past seasons indescretions, not anything more so any info that surfaces linking them to any past transgretions should be met with the harsher sanctions/ punishments by John Wayne Goodell!

The Pats even appologized for this years cheeting to all of the NFL and swore there was no previous issues of cheeting?
If they lied it should be handled surverly!
Why doesn't Os go after the cheeters?
I would love to see a beet-up on the Patriots by Os, we all know if it was the Raiders they would fry!

Os would have still been wrighting about it from the beging of the 2007 season thats a lot of ting ting ting and a whole lot of ink er pixels even for Os!

Os here is your chance to write a real article like a real reporter of dare I say Journalist?

Os Os Os the fan chant OS OS OS!
Can you see it now OS people actially taking you seriously!

I guess I'm just dreaming like OS says we are about the Raiders having success this year!

Os is a Pats fan Sec 116, so he not only has no integrity but to add he is a supporter of the cheating Pats.

RaiderSensation, I agree with you, but thats the world we are living in, guys like Moss who quit on their team & cheaters like the Pats are the new model(s) of today's NFL-Great job Goodell...

On to better things- the OAKLAND RAIDERS two days until the Rookies show up...
Just Win Baby!!

I know he had a bad senior bowl and combine I know he had the maryjane right before the draft but he is a 1st or 2nd round talent as a undrafted free agent low contract and no risk in a position of need despite

I watched Archuleta play in HS; he weighed 150 lbs soaking wet. He gets to A-State 40 lbs heavier in his freshman year. Hmmm! Now he can't keep a job. Do you smell what the Oldman is smelling? I'm all for giving hard workers an opportunity to play ball, but i just don't know about this guy.

Some people think the Mona Lisa is just a painting, some people think a Ferrari 308 GT is just a car, or a Black 69 Jag XKE convertible is nice. In short, some people never get it. I'm merely pointing out a Freaking Freight Train is on it's way. It's natural selection, like deer in the head lights, some people will never get it. I was laughing out loud when I read one response to my earlier post. The guy started rattling off stat's! It's May! Did anyone forget to mention they don't hike the ball until September? Same guy started talkling about Washington Fabian, and other fast guys that didn't make the "A" list. Heads up, those guys are gone. The new guys are here and I don't care if you get it or not. I'm just telling yea, Al Davis made his move. He operated like the Master he is. Yea, it's expensive, sometimes some nice pieces don't make the cut, but that's what it takes, good luck Rhodes, signing for the NFL minimum, good luck Fabian, Mr. content to be on the bench. Why in the world would I care those two are gone? Replaced both of them with, Oh yea, the best back to come along since Bo Jackson! Replaced the other with an All-Pro guy that ran a 4.17. Gee, guess the All-Pro means he might be able to play. Mr. Davis made to many many subtle improvements to both sides of the lines, but if just these two improvements are lost on you. You just don't get it. Don't worry, it's no biggie. Personally, I'm betting heavily on the Raiders this year, mostly early, before the bandwagon gets too crowded. Once the Talking Heads swing the odds will narrow.
